PHILADELPHIA – Despite a combined 46 points from Shey Peddy and Qwedia Wallace, the Temple women's basketball team lost its bid to win the Atlantic 10 regular season, falling 73-66 to #6/6 Xavier at the Liacouras Center on Sunday afternoon. Both teams came in undefeated in conference play. The loss snapped the Owls' 15-game win streak, and puts Temple as the #2 seed in next week's A-10 Tournament.
Temple will face the winner of #7 St. Bonaventure and #10 Fordham in the quarterfinals at 5:00 p.m. on Saturday, March 5. The entire tournament will be held at the Tsongas Center in Lowell, Mass.
The Owls (22-7, 13-1) got 24 points from Peddy along with a game-high six steals, and 22 points from Wallace, who now holds Temple's all-time career record for three-pointers with 155. Kristen McCarthy recorded a double-double for Temple with 11 points and a team-high 10 rebounds.
Wallace along with fellow seniors Marli Bennett and Danielle Brinkley were honored prior to tip-off as part of Senior Day.
Xavier's two powerhouse forwards stole the show for the Musketeers. Amber Harris scored 26 points and grabbed 12 rebounds, and teammate Ta'Shia Phillips scored 18 points while leading all players with 15 boards.
Both teams held double-digit leads at one point in the game. While Xavier led for the entire second half, the Owls were rarely more than one or two possessions away. Temple's toughness was evident on the glass as the Owls out-rebounded Xavier 44-41, a team that ranks eighth in the nation with a rebound margin of +10.
Temple started strong with leads of 8-0 and 15-5, but a 10-2 Xavier run quickly put the Owls back on the defensive. The Musketeers took a lead at 21-19 and would never trail again in the game.
It was a story of runs for both teams throughout the game. With the score tied at 24-24 and six minutes left in the first half, Xavier went on an 8-0 run before a 7-0 Temple run nearly evened things back up. The Musketeers took a 35-32 lead at halftime.
Temple kept it close for the first 10 minutes of the second half and trailed by just one 52-51 with 10:48 remaining. The Owls then hit a wall offensively, going 0-of-8 from the field and turning the ball over four times in the next seven minutes as Xavier took a 12-point, 65-53 lead.
Peddy ended the drought with back-to-back layups near the one-minute mark, putting Temple back within striking distance. The record-breaking trey from Wallace put Temple within five at 25 seconds on the clock, but Xavier made all of its final four attempts at the line to hold off the Owls.
