SALT LAKE CITY, Utah – With solid performances on both ends of the floor, the 10th-seeded Temple women's basketball team advanced to its fifth-ever NCAA Second Round with a 63-45 win over seventh-seeded Arizona State (20-11). The Owls (24-8) got a team-high 12 points from sophomore Victoria Macaulay in the victory on Saturday afternoon at the University of Utah's Huntsman Center.
Temple will advance to play the winner of second-seeded Notre Dame and 15th-seeded Utah. The 18-point win was the largest margin of victory for the Owls in its NCAA Tournament history. The second-round game will take place Monday, March 21, and Temple will be going for its first-ever appearance in the Sweet 16.
Shey Peddy and Kristen McCarthy scored 10 points apiece for Temple, with Peddy adding seven rebounds, six steals and three assists. Peddy now holds Temple's single-season record for steals with 101, breaking the previous record of 96.
Natasha Thames and Qwedia Wallace scored eight points for the Owls, and Thames tied for team-high honors with seven rebounds.
Arizona State was led by Kimberly Brandon with 11 points and Becca Tobin with 10. Leading scorer Dymond Simon was held to just five points and 1-of-6 shooting from the field.
After trailing 7-2 early in the game, Temple used a 6-0 run to take its first lead. The Owls trailed only once more, briefly at 8-9 before going on to lead the rest of the half.
Macaulay drove to the basket on two of three possessions near the eight-minute mark to give the Owls a seven-point lead, and McCarthy nailed back-to-back jumpers to put Temple up by nine, 20-11 at 6:10.
Arizona State's Kimberly Brandon hit a pair of buckets to narrow the margin to five at 5:40, but Temple closed out the half on an 11-5 run to lead by 11, 31-20 at halftime.
Temple out-shot the Sun Devils 43 percent to 26.7 percent from the field in the first half and out-rebounded ASU 21-18. McCarthy and Macaulay led all players with eight points at the break.
After the Sun Devils scored on the first possession of the second half, Peddy hit a three-pointer to start a 7-0 run over a two and half minute span to put the Owls up by 16, 38-22.
Arizona State came within no fewer than 13 points the rest of the way, and an 8-0 Temple run ending at the midway point of the half put the Owls up by 21, 48-27. Temple's largest lead of the second half was 24, with the outcome never in doubt. The Owls improved their shooting to 48 percent, and finished the game with only 10 turnovers to Arizona State's 18.
