Owls two-match win streak halted by Lions

PHILADELPHIA, Pa. - The Temple Women's Tennis team dropped a tough 4-3 decision to Columbia on Saturday afternoon at the Arthur Ashe Tennis Center. The Owls fall to 4-4 for the season.
In doubles play, the senior duo of Elyse Steiner and Lucie Pazderova got things started with an 8-2 victory at second doubles. After Columbia claimed the third doubles spot, the deciding match came down to first doubles. After being down in the beginning, seniors Theresa Stangl and Christine Clermont fought back to win 9-7 over Columbia's Nicole Bartnik and Bianca Sanon, the number four doubles team in the Northeast region, giving the Owls the point.
In singles play, Columbia's Tiana Takenaga defeated Alicia Doms at fourth singles 6-1, 6-1 to tie the match at 1-1. The Owls would follow with loses at both the fifth and sixth positions with Mellana Cramer and Jordan Batey losing 7-5, 7-5 and 6-3, 6-2, respectively, giving the Lions a 3-1 lead. Columbia would secure the win with a victory at first singles. Theresa Stangl faced Nicole Bartnik and, after dropping the first set 6-4, Stangl would fight back to win the second 6-3 before falling in the third 6-3.
With the Lions up 4-1 and the match decided, Yana Mavrina and Elyse Steiner picked up wins at both the second and third singles, respectively. After losing the first set 6-2, Mavrina fought back to win the final two, 6-2, 6-4. Steiner also needed three sets to defeat her opponent, winning 6-4, 6-7 (9-7), 6-2.
The Owls will continue play next weekend when they travel to Maryland to take on UMBC at 2pm.
