Freshman Mavrina earns point for Owls at fourth singles

PHILADELPHIA, Pa. – The Temple women's tennis team suffered a tough 6-1 loss to Syracuse at Arthur Ashe Tennis Center on Sunday morning. The lone point of the day came from freshman Yana Mavrina at 4th singles.
In doubles action, Syracuse got things started with an 8-2 victory at third doubles over Mellana Cramer and Jordan Batey. The Orange would go on to secure the doubles point with a victory at first doubles 8-3. The senior duo of Lucie Pazderova and Elyse Steiner were able to pick up a win at second doubles 8-6, but it was too little, too late.
In singles play, Josephine Bergmen fell to Syracuse's Simone Kalhorn, 6-2, 6-2 at number five. She was followed by Theresa Stangl and Cramer, who lost at first and sixth singles, respectively. At fourth singles, Lucie Pazderova fell to Syracuse's Christina Tan, 6-4, 6-3, to give The Orange the match.
With the match decided, Mavrina would provide the Owls with the lone point of the day. After losing the first set 2-6, Mavrina would fight back to win the second 6-2 and take the tiebreaker 10-2. In second singles, Elyse Steiner dropped her match in three sets. After losing the first set 2-6, Steiner fought back to win the second 6-2, but lost in the deciding tiebreaker 10-8.
The Owls fall to 4-5 for the season. They will continue play next weekend when they travel to Maryland to face UMBC on March 13.
