Stangl gets an impressive win over regionally ranked player
BALTIMORE, Md. – The Temple women's tennis team handed UMBC a 5-2 loss on a windy Sunday afternoon. The Owls improve to 5-5 for the season.
In doubles play, the freshman duo of Yana Mavrina and Alicia Doms got things started with an 8-2 victory at third doubles. They were followed by Theresa Stangl and Jordan Batey, who secured the point for the Owls with an 8-2 win at second doubles. The senior duo of Elyse Steiner and Lucie Pazderova lost at first doubles to UMBC's Kim Berghaus and Carmen Jackman, 8-4.
In singles play, Batey extended the lead with an impressive 6-0, 6-1 victory at sixth singles. In the fifth position, Pazderova fell to Emily Mannix, 6-3, 6-0 to pull the Retrievers within one. At fourth singles, Doms had an impressive win, defeating Heidi Danielsson, 6-2, 6-4, to give the Owls a 3-1 lead. Steiner would secure the win with a tough two setter at second singles. After trailing in the first set 4-1, Steiner fought back to win the match, 6-4, 7-6 (6).
With the match decided, play continued on courts three and one. After winning the first set 6-2, Mavrina would go on to lose the match 3-6, 3-6. In first singles, Stangl faced UMBC's Berghaus, ranked 20th in the Atlantic region in singles play. Stangl won the first set, 6-4, before dropping the second in a tiebreak. However, she came out strong in the third set to win 6-1.
The Owls will continue play on Wednesday March 16th when they host California University of Pennsylvania at Arthur Ashe Tennis Center at 9 am.
