TU handles nationally ranked Division II squad with ease

PHILADELPHIA, Pa. – The Temple women's tennis handed California University of Pennsylvania a 6-1 loss on Wednesday morning at the Arthur Ashe Tennis Center. The Vulcans are the top-ranked Division II team in the Atlantic Region, and hold a #20 national rank. The Owls improve to 6-5 for the season.

In doubles play, the freshman duo of Alicia Doms and Yana Mavrina got things started with an 8-2 win at third doubles. However, senior Theresa Stangl and freshman Jordan Batey would fall to California's Axelle Fernandez and Anastassiya Zherdeva, 8-5. The deciding match came down to first doubles, where seniors Lucie Pavderova and Elyse Steiner were able to clinch the point for the Owls with an 8-6 win.

In singles play, Mavrina won her match at the third flight, 6-0, 6-2. Pazderova extended the lead to 3-0 with a 6-0, 6-2 win in the fifth position. She was followed by Doms, who won her match 6-1, 6-4 in the fourth position.

With the match decided in Temple's favor, play continued on courts six, two and one. Batey was able to take care of California's Laurie Novarro, 6-4, 6-2, in six singles. Steiner had some difficulty in the first set, but prevailed to win her match 7-5, 6-3 at number two. The lone loss of the day came at first singles where Stangl fell to California's Annabel Pieschl, 6-2, 6-2.

The Owls continue play this weekend when they travel to Ohio to face Atlantic-10 foes Dayton and Xavier.
