Women's Tennis Earns Home Win Against Drexel, 6-1

Owls win all three doubles, five of six singles matches

PHILADELPHIA, Pa. – The Temple women's tennis team had an impressive performance against cross city rival Drexel on Friday afternoon. The Owls defeated the Dragons, 6-1, in their first home match of the season at the Arthur Ashes Tennis Center.
In doubles play, seniors Lucie Pazderova and Elyse Steiner got things started with an 8-6 victory over Zeynep Mafa and Sonja Stosic. The freshman duo of Alicia Doms and Yana Mavrina secured the doubles point with an 8-4 win at second doubles, and seniors Christine Clermont and Theresa Stangl added an 8-4 win at the third flight to complete the sweep.
In singles action, Stangl kept things rolling with a straight-set win at the first flight over Gozde Unkaya, 6-0, 6-2. She was followed by Doms, who won 6-3, 6-4 at third singles. Junior Mellana Cramer wrapped up the match with a 6-3, 6-3 victory over Emma Brook at number four. The lone loss of the day for the Owls came at second singles where Marvina came up just short against Stosic, losing 7-6 (7-4), 6-4. In fifth singles, after dropping the first set 6-3, Pazderova came back to win the second set, 6-2, and take the tie breaker 10-3. Lastly, in sixth singles, freshman Carly Bohman picked up her first win of the season with a 7-6 (9-7), 6-1 win over Alex Bell.
"I was very happy with the way the girls came out and played today," commented head coach Steve Mauro. "Drexel has a much improved team this season. I was especially impressed with the way Mellana Cramer stepped in at number four and had a solid win, as well as the first start for Carly Bohman, who won in straight-sets at number six. Overall, it was a great team effort."
Temple improves to 2-1 on the season. The Owls will be in action next at Penn on Wednesday, February 9 at 4 p.m.
