Talented Quakers too much for Owls

PHILADELPHIA, Pa. – Temple's women's tennis squad came up against talented cross-city rival Penn, falling to the Quakers, 5-2, at the Levy Pavilion on Wednesday, February 9. The Owls drops to 2-2 on the season, while Penn improves to 4-2.
The host team got the quick start it was looking for in doubles action when the third-ranked pair in the Northeast region of Connie Hsu and Alexa Ely cruised their way to victory at the number one position. The duo dropped just one game on the way to the 8-1 victory over freshman Alicia Doms and Mellana Cramer. Temple came back strong, though, picking up victories in the remaining doubles matches. The Owls duo of seniors Lucie Pazderova and Elyse Steiner took number two, 8-4, before classmates Theresa Stangl and Christine Clermont earned the Cherry and White the point with an 8-5 win at the third flight.
Hsu, ranked first in the regions, evened the score at one match a piece with her quick straight-set victory over Teresa Stangl in the top singles match.
The Quakers took the lead and didn't look back with wins at two, three and four before the Owls would get back on the board.
TU's only win in singles came at number five. Pazderova defeated Daniela DePaoli 6-4 in the first set, and then earned Temple a point with a thrilling 7-6 (8-6) tiebreaker set in the second.
Up next for the Owls are two matches against two Atlantic 10 foes this weekend. Temple plays Richmond at Penn on Saturday, February 12, before hosting George Washington on Sunday, February 13 at Arthur Ashe Tennis Center.
