Junior boasts 4-1 singles record, 3-0 doubles mark this spring

NEWPORT NEWS, Va. – Temple's Dmitry Vizhunov and Charlotte's Anna Ekelund were named the Atlantic 10 Conference Men's and Women's Tennis Performers of the week, respectively, while Duquesne's Pete Carpenter and George Washington's Julia Blakeley were recognized as the league's Men's and Women's Rookie Performers of the Week, respectively, the Conference office announced on Monday.

Vizhunov has put together a stellar spring season thus far, posting a 4-1 record in singles play and remains perfect in doubles (3-0). The junior picked up wins over AJ Nelson of Richmond (6-4, 6-3), Jason Magnes of Penn (4-6, 6-2, 6-2), Mehdi Rhazali of Drexel (6-1, 6-1) and Georgetown's Brian Ward (6-2, 6-2) on both the number three and four singles courts. In doubles, he secured victories over Penn, Drexel, and Georgetown with partner Kacper Rams at No. 3 doubles.

Ekelund leads Charlotte with 10 singles wins and eight doubles victories so far in 2011, posting three in singles and three in doubles this spring. The Swedish import collected a trio of straight-set victories last week for the 49ers, playing at both number four and five singles, while capturing three doubles wins on the number one and two courts.

Carpenter went 4-1 in singles competition last week, claiming victories over St. Bonaventure, Buffalo, Niagara and Bucknell all at number two singles. The Alburtis, Pa., native also had four wins (4-1) in doubles play, teaming up with partner Kyle O'Leary on the number two court to defeat James Madison, St. Bonaventure, Niagara and Bucknell.

Blakeley is the only Colonial to win each match she has started this spring. Her first collegiate doubles match with fellow freshman Leah Pascrell was the doubles point clincher in a tight match-up against Howard. The Irvine, Calif., native also picked up four wins in number-two singles – defeating her counterparts at Drexel, Penn, George Mason and Howard.
