KISSIMMEE, Fla. – The Temple softball team split a pair of games on Friday, March 11, at the Rebel Spring Games in Kissimmee, Fla. The Owls defeated Holy Cross, 7-5, in the first game of the day before falling 3-2 to Loyola-Chicago in the second game.
The Crusaders got on the board first in game one. With two outs in the top of the first, Erin Fleming delivered a solo homerun over the centerfield fence for the 1-0 lead.
The score remained that way until Temple exploded for four runs in the bottom of the fourth. With runners on second and third and two outs, Kayla Cook singled to centerfield, bringing around both Sarah Prezioso and Devynne Nelons.
Alysse Pujol then set up two more runs for the Owls with a double to centerfield, putting Cook on third. Kristen Marris stepped in a singled to right, scoring Cook. Pujol took advantage of an error by the right fielder and also crossed the plate.
Temple's four runs proved timely, as Holy Cross came back to score two more in the top of the fifth and one in the sixth to tie the game 4-4. TU took the lead for good with three in the bottom of the sixth, using three hits to score three runs. Rachel Knable led off the inning with a homer, and Marris also had a two-run homerun in the inning.
The Crusaders scored one in the top of the seventh on a sacrifice fly, but pitcher Brooklin White finished out the complete game with ground out to end it.
White gave up five hits and five runs, three of them earned. She recorded six strikeouts and allowed four walks. Cook and Marris were both 2-for-3 at the plate, with two and three RBI, respectively.
Against Loyola-Chicago, it was the opponent again striking first. The Ramblers plated two in the bottom of the second on a sacrifice fly and a homerun.
The Owls chipped away at that with one in the fifth and one in the sixth to knot it up, 2-2. In the fifth, two singles and a walk loaded the bases for Nelons, who drew another walk to bring in Pujol for the first Temple run of the game. TU's run in the sixth came off the bat of Christina Sykora, who belted her first homerun of the season, a solo shot with one out.
Looking like it was going to go to extra innings, Loyola-Chicago pulled out the tricks in the bottom of the seventh. With one out and runners on first and third, the Ramblers attempted a squeeze play. Temple caught the runner coming home in a rundown, but she ultimately scored on an errant throw, giving LUC the 3-2 win.
Marris was the hard luck loser on the mound, going 6.1 innings and allowing six hits and two earned runs. She fanned four, while issuing just two walks. Sykora was 2-for-3 at the plate with an RBI.
The Owls are 6-10 and finish up play at the Rebel Spring Games with contests against Lafayette and Columbia on Saturday.
