Owls' Women's Tennis Earns 6-1 Win Over Visiting St. John's

Temple netters pick up fifth-straight win

PHILADELPHIA, Pa. – The Temple women's tennis team continued its dominating five-match win streak with a 6-1 victory over visiting St. John's on Wednesday, March 23, 2011, at Arthur Ashe Tennis Center. The Owls improve to 9-5 for the season.
Due to the fact St. John's arrived to the match late, the Red Storm forfeited the doubles point. The Owls began singles play with a 1-0 lead without playing a match.
Theresa Stangl extended the lead with a 6-2, 6-3 win over Nevena Selakovic in first singles. She was followed by freshman Alicia Doms, who dropped only three games in defeating the Red Storms' Diamond Adams, 6-0, 6-3. Senior Elyse Steiner secured the win for the Owls with a 7-5, 6-1 win at second singles.
With the match decided, play continued on courts three, five and six. In third singles, after winning the first set 6-3, rookie Yana Mavrina dropped the second 6-3, but came back to win in the deciding tiebreak, 10-1. She was followed by freshman Jordan Batey, who won the first set in a tiebreak (7-6(3)), dropped the second set, 1-6, but fought back to win the deciding tiebreak, 10-7.
The lone loss of the day came at the fifth position where Lucie Pazderova faced St. John's Jenny Yonkus. After winning the first set 7-6(4), Pazderova would ultimately lose the match, 5-7, 10-6.
The Owls continue play on Friday March 25 when they travel to University Park to play Penn State at 5 p.m.
