UNIVERSITY PARK, PA - The Temple women's tennis team had its five-match win streak snapped with a tough 4-3 loss at Penn State Friday. The owls fall to 9-6 on the season while the Nittany Lions improve to 5-9.
Temple took the doubles point to start the day. Temple's Elyse Steiner and Lucie Pazderova posted an 8-6 victory over Marie-Frederique Bedard and Fernanda Perrotta in second doubles. Penn State's team of Carmen Sandor and Denisa Zobeideh defeated Yana Mavrina and Alicia Doms, 8-4, in third doubles. The Owls' top team of Theresa Stangl and Christine Clermont won a tight 9-8 match over Petra Januskova and Amy Simidian to clinch the point.
Steiner defeated Simidian, 6-0, 7-5, in second singles to put Temple ahead 2-0. Januskova then defeated Stangl, 6-30, 6-0 in first singles and Sandor topped Mavrina, 7-5, 6-3, at third singles to even the match. Zobeideh then recovered from a first set loss, to take a 2-6, 6-0, 6-2 decision over Doms at the fourth slot to give PSU the lead. Bedard would make it a victory for the Nittany Lions with a 6-1, 6-4 win over Pazderova at fifth singles. Jordan Batey then closed out the match with a win for the Owls in the sixth slot, a come-from-behind 3-6, 6-2, 10-8 decision.
The Owls next host George Washington at Arthur Ashe Tennis center at 8:00 a.m. on Sunday.
