Women's Tennis' Run at A-10 Championship Halted

CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. - Temple's women's tennis team's run at the Atlantic 10 Championship came to an end on Saturday, April 9, as the second-seeded Owls fell to third seed Saint Louis, 4-3. TU will now play fourth-seeded George Washington for third place on Sunday, April 10 at 10:30 a.m.
The Cherry and White got things started the right way with the doubles point win. Freshmen Yana Mavrina and Alicia Doms won at number three, 8-3. Seniors Theresa Stangl and Christine Clermont wrapped it up with an 8-6 win at number two.
Temple increased it to a 2-0 lead with senior Elyse Steiner's 6-4, 6-1 defeat of Casey Miller at number two. From there, SLU won the next three matches to take a 3-2 advantage with two singles bouts left. Freshman Jordan Batey tied it up at 3-3 with a 6-1, 6-4 win over Mia Elmore at number six, her 11th-straight singles win.
The match came down to first singles, with Stangl squaring off against the reigning Atlantic 10 Performer of the Year. Stangl put up a valiant effort, taking Elmore to three sets, but Saint Louis ultimately prevailed in a 3-6, 6-4, 6-1 decision to claim the match.
The Owls, 16-7, play George Washington at 10:30 a.m. on Sunday for third place. TU defeated GW, 5-2, earlier this season.
