Women's Tennis Wins 6-1 Over Detroit Mercy at Duquesne

Owls winners of all three doubles, five of six doubles bouts

PITTSBURGH, Pa. – The Temple women's tennis team continued its winning streak by defeating Detroit Mercy 6-1 on Saturday afternoon. The Owls improve to 13-6 for the season.
In doubles play, Josephine Bergman and Alicia Doms got things started with an 8-4 victory at third doubles. They were followed by Lucie Pazderova and Elyse Steiner, who won at second double,s 8-5. The senior duo of Theresa Stangl and Christine Clermont rounded out the doubles with an 8-6 win at third doubles.
In singles play, Pazderova was able to extend the lead by defeating Detroit's Elena Strakhova, 6-2, 6-1, in third singles. She was followed by Alicia Doms, who dropped just two games in defeating Amanda Cornwell, 6-1,6-1, in second singles. In fifth singles, freshman Jordan Batey had little trouble defeating Julia Fernandes, 6-1, 6-4, to secure the win for the Owls.
With the match decided, play continued on courts one, four and six. In the fourth position, after being down, 2-5, Bergman was able to fight back to win the first set 7-5. She then went on to win the second set 6-2. The lone loss of the day came at sixth singles where freshman Carly Bohman fell to Detroit's Erin Weldon, 6-4, 6-3.
In first singles, Stangl had an impressive win over Carolina Salas Espinosa, 6-4, 7-5.
The Owls continue play on Tuesday April 4th when they host Delaware at the Arthur Ashe Tennis Center at 12 p.m.
