Marris Throws Complete Game Shutout Against Saint Louis

Senior hurler wins 1-0 and scores Temple's lone run

SAINT LOUIS, Mo. – The Temple softball team improved to 20-18 overall and 11-3 in Atlantic 10 play with a 1-0 win at Saint Louis on Friday, April 22. The Owls scored their lone run in the top of the first inning, and senior pitcher Kristen Marris kept the Billikens in check the rest of the way for the victory.
Marris got the game started with a leadoff single through the right side. Junior Samantha Schoell advanced her to second with a sacrifice, and freshman Stephanie Pasquale stepped in one out later and delivered an RBI single to bring Marris around.
That would be the only run scored the rest of the way. The Cherry and White did threaten to add to their lead in the top of the fifth, collecting two hits and stranding three on the bases. Junior Christina Sykora led off the inning with a single, and Marris followed with her second hit of the game. Schoell moved both runners over with another sacrifice. Pasquale drew a two-out walk to load the bases, but Saint Louis pitcher Julian Austin induced sophomore Ali Robinson to ground out to third to end the inning and the threat.
The Billikens showed signs of life in the bottom of the seventh when Alyson Brand opened the frame with a single. A groundout to third advanced the runner to second with one out, but Marris got a flyout and another ground out to end the game.
Marris (14-8) threw her sixth-straight complete game victory, allowing four hits, walking one and striking out two. She and Pasquale both recorded two hits for Temple in the win.
At 20-18, TU has reached its highest season win total since winning 22 games in the 2006 season. The Owls are in action next on April 26 when they host Saint Joseph's for a conference doubleheader beginning at 3 p.m.
