Owls look to continue hot play in conference tournament
Howey-in-the-Hills, Fla. – Coming off its first tournament win in three years, the Temple Golf team is set to tee off at the 33rd annual Atlantic 10 Men's Golf Championship Friday. The three-day tournament is being held at the Mission Inn Resort in Howey-in-the-Hills, Fla. with the conference champion being crowned on Sunday, May 1.
Temple, under the direction of fourth-year head coach Brian Quinn, has placed among the top five schools in five straight tournaments culminating in its first place showing at the rain-shortened URI Spring Invitational last weekend. The Owls, who finished 10th last season, will be looking to upend favorite and five-time defending champion Charlotte. The Cherry and White has won six A-10 titles with the last coming in 1995.
Senior Andrew Mason, a two-time A-10 Player of the Week this season, leads the Owls with a 73.9 stroke per round average. Three freshmen Connor McNicholas (75.6), Steve Burak (76.7) and Russell Hartung (77.7) are next for the Owls with sophomore Devin Bibeau (77.9) rounding out the team's top five golfers.
The 49ers are looking to become the first school in league history to win the A-10 championship six years in a row. Former A-10 member Penn State won the championship five straight years from 1986 to 1991. Rhode Island, Temple and Penn State have won the most league championships with six each. Since 1998, only three schools have won the team title including Charlotte, Xavier and Rhode Island.
Live scoring for all three rounds will be available at www.golfstat.com. For complete Atlantic 10 golf coverage, stay tuned to the league's official conference website at www.atlantic10.com.
