PHILADELPHIA - Bolstered by NCAA Tournament wins by both its men's and women's basketball teams, as well as a 13th place finish by its fencing program, Temple cracked the Top 100 in the latest Learfield Sports Directors' Cup Standings released today (April 7). The Owls picked up 50 points each from men's and women's basketball and an additional 48 points from fencing to total 148 for the winter season.

"We are very proud of our performance in the winter season," said Temple Director of Athletics Bill Bradshaw. "To be ranked among the nation's Top 100 athletic programs is a goal we strive for every year. We are hopeful for a strong close to academic year from our spring sports."

Besides the Top 100 placing, Temple is also in elite company in some other key athletic metrics.

* Temple is one of only six schools (Texas, Xavier, Tennessee, Duke, Texas A&M) to have competed in the last four men's and women's basketball NCAA Tournaments.

* In combined wins by its men's and women's basketball and football programs over the last two years, Temple ranks fifth with 121 wins, behind only Connecticut (141), Duke (137), Notre Dame (125), West Virginia (123), and ahead of Ohio State (120), Florida State (115) and North Carolina (109).

* Temple is one of only three schools (Texas A&M and Tennessee) to have its men's and women's basketball team compete in the last two NCAA Tournaments and its football team be bowl-eligible each season.

The Learfield Sports Directors' Cup was developed as a joint effort between NACDA and USA Today. Points are awarded based on each institutions finish in up to 20 sports – 10 women's and 10 men's.
