Women's Tennis Advances In A-10 Championship with 4-0 Win Over UMass

Second-seeded Owls move on to play Saint Louis or Duquesne in second round

CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. – The second-seeded Temple women's tennis team moved on in the Atlantic 10 Championship with a 4-0 first-round win over Massachusetts on Friday, April 8, at the Boar's Head Sports Club in Charlottesville, Va. The Owls go up against #3 Saint Louis or #6 Duquesne at 1 p.m. on Saturday.
Seniors Theresa Stangl and Christine Clermont put Temple in good position with their 8-2 win at second doubles. Classmates Elyse Steiner and Lucie Pazderova gave the Owls the 1-0 lead with a 9-7 victory at number one. With the team's playing to decision, third doubles did not finish with Massachusetts leading 7-6.
In singles action, Pazderova added to the TU lead with a 6-3, 6-1 decision over Chantal Swiszcz at number five. Freshman Jordan Batey increased it to a 3-0 Temple advantage with her 6-1, 6-3 win at number six over Kaitlyn Carpenter. Steiner closed out the match with a challenging 7-5, 6-2 defeat of Julia Comas at number two, giving Temple the 4-0 win.
"The women came out ready to play today," said head coach Steve Mauro. "They were fired up from the start and worked really hard, as they have been doing all year long. We hope to keep the ball rolling against whoever we end up facing tomorrow."
The Cherry and White (16-6) advance to the second round of play to face the winner of third-seeded Saint Louis and sixth-seeded Duquesne at 1 p.m. on Saturday, April 9.
