4.7.11 | Women's Tennis

Squad travels to Charlottesville, Va., for 28th annual tournament

NEWPORT NEWS, Va. – The Temple women's tennis team received the second seed at the 28th annual Atlantic 10 Women's Tennis Championship on April 8-10 at the Boar's Head Sports Club in Charlottesville, Va. The Owls, who receive a bye in the first round, will face the winner of the #7 Massachusetts vs. #10 Fordham match at 3:30 p.m. on Friday, April 8.

Seven-time champion Richmond is the top seed at the event. The Spiders, vying for their third-straight A-10 title and seventh in the last eight years, are anchored by junior Helen Cunningham, a two-time All-Conference selection, and three-time All-Conference pick Kelly Tidwell.

Senior Theresa Stangl looks to lead second-seeded Temple to its fifth crown in program history and first since 2008, while third-seeded Saint Louis, behind the efforts of reigning A-10 Performer of the Year Hailee Elmore, will battle for its first Conference title.

TU has posted a 15-6 record through the regular-season this spring, including a 6-1 record in A-10 play. Temple's only conference loss came in the form of a 4-3 decision against top-seeded Richmond early in the season. The Cherry & White ended the year on a six-match win streak that featured three 7-0 decisions and four wins over conference foes. Temple did not face Massachusetts during the regular season this year, but did recently defeat Fordham, 7-0.

Stangl has reached the 20-win plateau in singles play for the first time in her career. At 20-14 overall, she has posted a 10-8 mark at the first flight and ended the regular-season with a five-match win streak. Also reaching 20 singles wins is freshman Jordan Batey. Batey is 20-5 on the season, featuring an 11-1 dual match record that includes a current nine-match win streak.

In doubles action, the freshman duo of Alicia Doms and Yana Mavrina have impressed this year. Going 15-5 overall and 12-3 in dual meets, the rookies have played primarily at number three, going 8-2. Also having a solid doubles campaign are seniors Lucie Pazderova and Elyse Steiner, who have paired up to go 12-5, including an impressive 7-1 record at number two.

The seeds for the Championship are Richmond (first), Temple (second), Saint Louis (third), George Washington (fourth), Xavier (fifth), Duquesne (sixth), Massachusetts (seventh), Charlotte (eighth), Dayton (ninth), Fordham (10th), Saint Joseph's (11th), St. Bonaventure (12th), Rhode Island (13th) and La Salle (14th).

Competition begins on Friday, April 8, at 8:00am, with the final match of the day set to start at 6:00pm. On Saturday, April 9, play begins at 8:00am with the final match slated for 3:30pm. The fifth-place match of the Atlantic 10 Women's Tennis Championship will commence on Sunday, April 25, at 8:00am. The third place and title matches close out the event at 10:30am.
