PHILADELPHIA - The Temple Women's Varsity 4 rowed like it deserved the top seed it was awarded, winning its heat in impressive fashion Friday on the Schuylkill River at the 2011 Aberdeen Dad Vail Regatta. The Owls' Varsity 8 advanced to the semifinals as well, doing it the hard way through the repechage.
Coming off a gold medal performance at the Bergen Cup, the Varsity 4, comprised of freshman Kara Carson (stroke), junior Kara Jackson (3-seat), sophomore Angela Flinn (2-seat), sophomore Brittany Adell (bow) and sophomore Jillian Malkowski (cox), defeated Lafayette by 10.3 seconds with Pittsburgh following in third.
The Heavyweight Varsity 8, comprised of sophomore Paige O' Sullivan (stroke), sophomore Megan Welsh (7-seat), junior Allison Boc (6-seat), junior Taylor Wasserleben (5-seat), sophomore Joanna Sutor (4-seat), freshman Jackie Lees (3-seat), Brynn Moore (2-seat), sophomore Claudia Loeber (bow) and senior Erin Buchanan (cox), placed fourth in its heat, 1.39 seconds behind Jacksonville. The Owls placed second in their "rep", again behind Jacksonville, to advance to the semis.
The Junior Varsity 8, comprised of junior Dana Meadows (stroke), senior Caitlin Pennington (7-seat), freshman Sarah Barber (6-seat), sophomore Grace Givnish (5-seat), freshman Sarah Gierhart (4-seat), sophomore Anne Marie McClintock (3-seat), freshman Lauren Kidd (2-seat), freshman Victoria Joye (bow) and senior Allison Bates (cox), placed sixth in its heat.
Saturday's semifinals get underway at 8:00 a.m. THe morning races will be videostreamed on www.dadvail.org with the finals being televised live by 6ABC starting at 1:00 p.m. and streamed on espn3.com.
