Temple alum ('11) ties for second in 105-player qualifier
HAVERTOWN, PA.– Temple alum Andrew Mason ('11) streak of tournament titles came to an end at three in the weather-delayed U.S. Amateur Qualifier held Monday at the Llanerch and Rolling Green Country Clubs, but the former Owl did grab one of four spots up for the 111th U.S. Amateur Championship set for Aug. 22-28 at Erin Hills in Erin, Wisc.
Mason tied for second in the field of 105 golfers, shooting a par 143 in the 36-hole event.
“This means a lot to me,” said Mason, 22, of Huntingdon Valley CC. “It's the biggest tournament in the world with the very best amateurs in the world.”
Mason, who won the Golf Association of Philadelphia Open Championship and Pennsylvania Golf Association Amateur Championship, in the last two weeks remains on fire. He posted rounds of 72 at Rolling Green GC and 71 at Llanerch CC to advance into his first U.S. Am.
Mason's teammate at Temple, sophomore-to-be Connor McNicholas, also fared well. The Ambler, Pa. native tied for seventh with a 148 on the day.
West Chester native Jeff Osberg, who's home course is LLanerch, won the tournament with a five-under 136.
