Men's Soccer Drops Match To Brown, 2-0
9.11.11 | Men's Soccer
PROVIDENCE, R.I. – In the final game of the Brown Soccer Classic, Temple men's soccer was held scoreless through 90 minutes by the hosting Brown Bears, dropping the match 2-0 on Sunday afternoon.
Deadlocked at zero after an evenly matched opening half, the Owls had a narrow 6-5 lead in the shots category.
Juniors Jake Lister and Matt MacWilliams each ripped shots on net, but both were stopped by Brown junior goalkeeper Sam Kernan-Schloss, yielding him and his team to the shutout victory.
Temple's biggest opportunity to put a dent in the scoreboard came inside the 12th minute. Sophomore Vaughn Spurrier had his kick blocked before the Owls reposed the ball and set it up for senior Tyler Witmer to launch a shot of his own, only to go high over the goal.
The Bears got on the board in the 49th minute when senior TJ Popolizio put back his own rebound after initially receiving the feed from junior Thomas McNamara.
After a shot by Dalton Carroll went high, the Bears worked their offense down the opposite end, where they set up their second goal of the afternoon. Sophomore Jose Salama scrambled in the box to retrieve a feed from senior Taylor Gorman before putting the ball behind Temple sophomore goalkeeper Bobby Rosato, who finished the match with two saves on the day.
The Owls will pick up action on Friday at 5:00 p.m. in DeLand, Fla. when they open play at the Stetson Tournament against the Jacksonville University Dolphins.
