NEWARK, Del. – Despite a deceiving overall record of 3-8, the Delaware Blue Hens displayed the type of performance that has won them three of the last four Colonial Athletic Association titles in a 3-0 sweep of Temple volleyball on Tuesday night. The Owls (3-7) got strong performances on defense but could not find the offense to back it up, losing by scores of 25-17, 25-11 and 25-12.
Chelsea Tupuola recorded a match-high 19 digs for the Owls in just three sets, while Elyse Burkert tallied eight digs and Tiffany Connatser added seven. Collin Wallace and Gabriella Matautia led the Owls with eight and seven kills apiece, respectively.
Katie Hank led Delaware with nine kills and Cara Rosehill led the Blue Hens with 15 digs.
Committing just one attack error as a team in the first set, Delaware out-hit Temple .394 to .216 and took a 1-0 lead by a score of 25-17. At one time down by nine, 22-13, the Owls made a run at getting back into the set with four straight points, but could come no closer.
Matautia knocked down five kills in the first set while Burkert added four, and Tupuola came up with eight digs.
The Blue Hens' strong hitting continued in the second set, and an early lead was too much for the Owls to recover from. Tupuola continued to be a force in the backcourt, adding eight more digs to her total, but errors at the net were costly for Temple as Delaware took the set, 25-11. Hitting errors continued to plague the Owls in the third set and Delaware put the match away by a score of 25-12.
The Owls have one final weekend of non-conference play remaining as they travel to Pittsburgh's Blue & Gold Invitational where they will face Pitt, Morgan State and New Mexico.
