Owls to face Pittsburgh, Morgan State and New Mexico

PHILADELPHIA - Temple volleyball will play in one final non-conference tournament this weekend at the University of Pittsburgh before starting Atlantic 10 play next weekend. The Owls (3-7) will face host Pitt on Friday along with Morgan State and New Mexico on Saturday.

Temple started the season 3-3 but is looking to get back on the winning track after some recent tough losses. The Owls got a set win in each of their matches at last weekend's Long Island Blackbird Invitational (Lehigh, Syracuse and LIU), but have lost four straight including a sweep at the hands of Delaware earlier this week.

Leading Temple offensively are senior Collin Wallace with 3.54 kills per set, and sophomore Gabriella Matautia with 3.11 kills per set. Junior Chelsea Tupuola is the defensive leader with 4.11 digs per set, and freshman Tiffany Connatser is averaging just under 10 assist per set along with 2.86 digs per set.

Pittsburgh is 8-2 on the season, with one of those losses coming to No. 5 Penn State. The Panthers lead the Big East in service aces with 71 on the season, and Pitt has limited its opponents to hitting .131 so far this season. Monica Wignot leads the team in kills with 3.50 per set, Margy Acton leads the team in digs at 4.47 per set and Brenea White leads the team in blocks with 36 (1.29 bps).

Morgan State started the season with two wins but has since struggled, losing eight straight. The Bears are led offensively by freshman Nangeeshie Plaud with 2.59 kills per set and defensively by senior Erin Cox with 3.24 digs per set.

The New Mexico Lobos are 5-2 overall after going undefeated at the Comcast/Sheraton Lobo Invitational, beating UC Irvine, 3-2, Portland State, 3-0 and Montreal 3-0. Last season, the Lobos made it to the NCAA Tournament for the second season in a row with an overall record of 20-10. Senior middle blocker Ashley Rhoades is leading the Lobos with 3.96 kills per set, which also leads the Mountain West Conference.

Temple will start conference play on the road next weekend with matches at Xavier and Dayton before returning home on Sept. 30 to face Rhode Island.
