Volleyball Defeated by Pitt on Day One of the Blue & Gold Tournament

Owls lose in three sets including a narrow, 28-26 loss in the third

PITTSBURGH, Pa. - Despite taking the third set to extra points, the Temple volleyball team ultimately fell to host Pittsburgh on day one of the Pitt Blue & Gold Tournament. The Owls (3-8) lost in three sets by scores of 25-16, 25-19 and 28-26 to Pittsburgh (9-3).
Temple displayed some of its best blocking of the season with 10 team blocks to the Panthers' 8.5. Leading the Owls offensively were Elyse Burkert and Gabriella Matautia with seven kills apiece, while Burkert and Tiffany Connatser recorded eight digs each to lead Temple.
The Panthers' Monica Wignot recorded a double-double of 15 kills and 10 digs to lead all players in the match.
After Pitt ran away with the first set, Temple came back stronger in set two and was still tied, for the 11th time, at 17-17 with the Panthers. The momentum then swung the way of Pitt down the stretch as the Panthers used a 7-1 run to put the set away.
The third set saw seven ties and four lead changes, with the Owls making a late rally to stay in it. Down 24-20, Temple fought off four straight match points and even had a set point of their own at 26-25. At that point, Pitt tallied three straight kills to put away the set and the match.
Temple will be back in action tomorrow with a 10:00 a.m. match against Morgan State and later a 5:00 p.m. match against New Mexico.
