Owls sweep Bears; win second of four sets against the Lobos

PITTSBURGH, Pa. - The Temple volleyball team had a strong showing on the final day of the Pitt Blue & Gold Invitational, sweeping Morgan State 3-0 and taking the powerhouse Lobos of New Mexico to four sets before falling, 3-1. The Owls (4-9) beat Morgan State (2-9) by scores of 25-19, 25-16 and 25-14 before falling to New Mexico (7-3), 25-16, 16-25, 25-22 and 25-21.
Gabriella Matautia was solid in both matches for Temple with two double-doubles, leading all players with 11 kills and 10 digs against Morgan State and recording 14 more kills along with 11 digs vs. New Mexico. For her efforts, she was named to the All-Tournament Team.
Collin Wallace also notched a double-double against the Lobos with 13 kills and 14 digs, as did Tiffany Connatser with 44 assists and 11 digs. Chelsea Tupuola led all players with 23 digs in the the second match, while Elyse Burkert led all players with 19 kills.
Temple was rarely threatened in its match against Morgan State, out-hitting the Bears .236 to .098 as a team. Along with seven more kills than Morgan State, the Owls also served up six aces to the Bears' two, with four of those coming from Emily Frazer. Temple got consistently stronger in every set with more kills and fewer errors as the match went on.
In its match against New Mexico, Temple saw the Lobos take control of the first set but the Owls rebounded to return the favor in the second. Burkert knocked down five kills with no errors in that set, helping Temple to a big lead midway through that it would not relinquish.
After falling behind 23-17 in the third set, the Owls rallied to pull within two at 24-22 before the Lobos' Ashley Rhoades, their leading hitter, got a kill for the final point of the set. Temple rallied again at the end of the third set thanks to a string of kills from Matautia, but it was too little too late as the Lobos held on for the win.
Temple has concluded non-conference play and will start its Atlantic 10 schedule on the road next weekend at Xavier and Dayton.
