Owls take on Drexel and Penn in weekend action
PHILADELPHIA, Pa. - In preparation for the 2012 season, head coach Joe DiPietro and the Temple softball team has announced it will again be participating in the Rocci Pignoli Memorial City Six Championship, hosted by Penn on September 30-October 1, 2011. The event, hosted by Temple in the past, is being played at the brand-new softball field of the state-of-the-art Penn Park, newly opened this fall.
This tournament will honor the late Rocci Pignoli, former head coach of the Temple Owls' softball team. Pignoli was the head coach of Temple softball for eight seasons (1998-2005) and amassed 175 wins throughout his time, which ranks second all-time in Temple history. Prior to being appointed as the head coach, Pignoli served as an assistant at TU for three years. Five times Pignoli guided his team to the Atlantic 10 tournament with his most successful stint coming on in 2004, where his squad captured the Atlantic 10 title and an NCAA tournament bid.
In addition to Temple and Penn, Drexel, La Salle, Saint Joseph's, and Villanova will round out the field that features all six of the Division I softball programs in Philadelphia. The six Philadelphia schools will be split into two pools for this tournament; with the winner of each pool advancing to the championship game. Pool A will feature Saint Joseph's, Villanova, and La Salle, while Temple will be in Pool B alongside Penn and Drexel.
Play begins on Friday, September 30 at 5 p.m. when La Salle takes on Villanova. Villanova will then take on Saint Joseph's at 7 p.m. in the second game of the evening. Saturday morning, the tournament resumes with Pool B beginning play with TU and Drexel at 10 a.m. The Cherry and White follow that with a game against the host school at noon.
At 2 p.m., Penn will take on Drexel; closing out Pool B. Pool A will wrap up its schedule when Saint Joseph's and La Salle return to Penn Park at 4 p.m. After the completion of pool play, a home run derby, featuring two players from each team will be held at 6 p.m. To close out the tournament, the winner of Pool A will take on the winner of Pool B in the championship game, slated for 7 p.m.
