Dubrow Helps Owls Make Team History at Paul Short Invite

BETHLEHEM, PA. - Temple women's cross country competed at the Paul Short Invitational presented by Brooks at Lehigh University on Friday.  In the Women's Brown 6K run, Temple finished 32nd overall, marking the highest the women's cross country squad has ever placed in the 38 years of the annual race. Freshman Jenna Dubrow had a record-breaking day, as she finished 40th overall, which marked the best finish for a Temple runner at any prior Paul Short Invitational. 

“The women's side is very young, but I see them moving in the right direction,” head coach Matt Jelley said. “All of the ladies ran well for us today and because of that we were able to have a successful finish at this meet.”

Sophomore Taylor Goldsworthy, who didn't see much action last season, got the opportunity to compete on Friday. Goldsworthy stepped up with a strong finish, placing second among Temple runners in a time of 24:29.

After not running last season, sophomores Erin Casey and Anna Pavone finished the race in strong stride after getting off to a slow start to finish. Casey and Pavone completed the race inside the 24th minute to finish 183rd and 205th, respectively.

Sophomore Stephanie Dorantes, who's been dealing with a knee ailment, placed fifth among Temple runners. Dorantes placed 211th in a time of 24:50.

A second later, senior Karrie Finn crossed the finish line to take 212th place overall, before junior Deirdre MacFarlane rounded out the run for the Owls at 25:17 to finish 231st overall.

Earlier in the day, several members of the women's squad competed in the Women's Open.  Lauren Holquin ran unattached to Temple University, but placed 100th in the 6K.

Junior Tonney Smith competed in her first major distance run for the purpose of improving for the upcoming track and field season. Smith placed 188th in 25:52.

Also competing in the Open 6K were Jen Berman (208th, 26:01), Tashima Stephens (245th, 26:43), Chelsea Carleton (247th, 26:45), Victoria Gocht (260th, 26:55), Kiersten Brown (271st, 27:00), Andrea Mathis (276th, 27:08), Shanel Golding (287th, 27:29), Katherine Frank (295th, 27:48), Amy Stansbury (305th, 28:11) and Jennifer Abercrumbie (326, 30:06).

Next up for the Owls, they'll head to State College, Pa. on Oct. 14 to compete in the Penn State National Invitational.
