Owls to face 2011 NCAA Champion Texas A&M and seven other NCAA Tournament teams

2011-2012 Schedule

PHILADELPHIA – The 2011 NCAA Champion Texas A&M Aggies and seven other NCAA Tournament teams including Elite Eight participant Duke await Temple women's basketball during the 2011-12 season. The highlight of the Owls' non-conference schedule is a Thanksgiving trip to Freeport, Bahamas, for the Junkanoo Jam where Temple will open with defending national champion Texas A&M and then face either Iowa or St. John's.

Two nationally-televised contests highlight Temple's Atlantic 10 schedule, as the Owls will be on ESPN2 when they play at Dayton on Jan. 15, and on CBS Sports Network when they host Charlotte on Jan. 29.

After hosting Miami (OH) out of the Mid-American Conference (MAC) in their home opener on Nov. 11, the Owls travel to Northeastern on Nov. 15. The trip is a “homecoming” to Boston for senior Shey Peddy and fourth-year head coach Tonya Cardoza, who are both natives of the area. Three days later Temple will be in Columbus, Ohio, to face 2011 Big Ten champion and Sweet 16 participant Ohio State.

Temple will play its second MAC opponent on Nov. 20, facing Northern Illinois on the road.

The Junkanoo Jam is set for the Friday and Saturday after Thanksgiving, with the Owls facing NCAA champ Texas A&M first on Nov. 25. Depending on the outcome of the games, Temple will face either Iowa or St. John's the next day, both NCAA Tournament participants last season.

Temple will play its fifth straight road game at Rutgers on Nov. 30, another NCAA team from a year ago.

The five-game home slate in December begins with Auburn on Dec. 3 and continues with Kent State on Dec. 6. Prior to the holiday break, the Owls will host UCLA on Dec. 20 and Villanova on Dec. 22. The month will wrap-up with what has become an annual meeting against Duke, at home on Dec. 30.

The Owls' final non-conference road game will be Monday, Jan. 2 at Western Michigan, as Temple begins A-10 play that weekend at Richmond on Jan. 7.

The travel schedule is very balanced for the Owls throughout the A-10 schedule, as Temple will not play two straight conference games on the road this season. The Owls travel to defending A-10 champ Xavier for a Tuesday night game on Feb. 24 before returning home to face Charlotte on ESPN2 on Sunday, Jan. 29.

The Big 5 winner likely will not be decided until late in the season, as Temple faces Saint Joseph's (home) and La Salle (away) in its final two regular season games on Feb. 22 and Feb. 25.

Temple is coming off a 24-9 season that saw the Owls defeat Arizona State in the NCAA First Round before falling to eventual national runner-up Notre Dame in the second round.

Temple finished second in the A-10 regular season with a record of 13-1, but was taken out by Dayton in the semifinals of the A-10 Tournament. The Owls earned an at-large NCAA berth to mark the eighth straight year of participation in the NCAA Tournament.

This year's Atlantic 10 Championships will be held nearby at Saint Joseph's Hagan Arena from March 2-5, 2012.
