Owls get a game-high 21 points from reigning A-10 co-Player of the Week Kristen McCarthy

PHILADELPHIA – Despite a game-high 21 points from Kristen McCarthy, the solid offense of St. Bonaventure (15-2, 2-0) proved too much for Temple women's basketball in a 74-65 loss at the Liacouras Center on Wednesday night. The Owls now stand at 7-8 overall and 1-1 in the Atlantic 10.
Shey Peddy scored 17 points and grabbed seven boards for Temple, while BJ Williams added 14 points and a team-high five assists. McCarthy also recorded seven rebounds to go with her 21 points, and Victoria Macaulay led all players with nine boards.
Megan Van Tatenhove scored 20 points and tallied seven rebounds to lead St. Bonaventure, and the Bonnies shot 46 percent from the field including 7-of-15 behind the arc.
Temple trailed from the get-go and tied the game only at 2-2 as St. Bonaventure came out firing from three-point range.
The Bonnies' Jessica Jenkins made all three attempts at the line after being fouled while shooting a three, starting what became a 13-0 run for St. Bonaventure. The Bonnies had made 4-of-5 from behind the arc before the midway point of the first half.
Williams hit a jumper to stop the bleeding, only to have the Bonnies come down and hit yet another trey, taking their largest lead of 16 points, 30-14 with 9:39 remaining.
Back-to-back jumpers by McCarthy put the margin back to 12, and she scored three more points during a 10-2 run for the Owls that put them within eight at 5:32 on the clock. The Bonnies went on to once again lead by 12 on two more occasions before a trey from McCarthy in the final minute sent the Owls into halftime down only nine, 40-31.
The Bonnies finished the half shooting nearly 54 percent from the field, led by Van Tatenhove with 13 points on 5-of-8 shooting. McCarthy led all players with 15 points at the break.
St. Bonaventure quickly increased its lead back to 13 in the second half, but Temple answered with an 11-4 run and trailed by just six, 50-44 near the 12-minute mark. The Owls suffered a blow when McCarthy received her fourth foul before the midway point of the half, and the Bonnies proceeded to use an 11-4 run to pull back ahead by 13.
Down by 14 with less than five minutes remaining, Temple made one final push with McCarthy back in the game, but was able to come within no fewer than eight. The Bonnies made 11 of their final 12 attempts at the stripe to hold off any further comeback by the Owls.
The Owls' next game takes them to Dayton for a 2:00 p.m. contest on Sunday, Jan. 15. The game will be televised nationally on ESPN2.
