Owls Take 6th Place in Season-Opening Meet at GW's Lindsey Ferris Invite

WASHINGTON, D.C. –
On Sunday afternoon, Temple Women's Gymnastics opened its 2012 agenda of competitions with a date in the Lindsey Ferris Invite, hosted by George Washington University. The Owls stood out in the floor exercise with a second place combined score of 47.575 en route to posting a total score of 187.450 for sixth place overall in the competition.

North Carolina took the top spot in the day's events with an all-around score of 192.650. Host school GW scored 190.325 to nab a second-place finish, followed by the University of Pennsylvania (189.025), Cornell (188.950) and William & Mary (188.800).

Senior and team captain Corrine Williams had Temple's highest all-around score, with a total of 37.800, earning her sixth place overall.

The day opened on the vault, where Williams and sophomore Jasmine Johnson tied for Temple's top-score and 11th place overall in the event with a score of 9.650. Second-year competitor Sylvie Borschel posted Temple's second-highest score on the apparatus of 9.757 for an 18th place.

Williams showed signs of having a strong day for the Owls by the end of the uneven parallel bars event. On the apparatus, Williams was once again Temple's top-finisher in an event with her score of 9.450.

Borschel put up a very impressive performance on the balance beam, turning in a score of 9.725, which earned her in fourth place in the event.  Junior Jean Alban posted a solid score on the same apparatus, earning 9.550 points for 15th place.

In her first collegiate competition, freshman Stephanie Verry scored 9.600 points in the floor exercise, which tied Johnson for fifth place overall and Temple's top score in the event.  Junior Margaret Walch took the Owls' second-highest score (9.500) to earn 12th place.

From here, the Owls will move onto their next competition which will be next Sunday at 3:00 p.m. when they participate in a tri-meet at Ursinus against the hosting Bears and Ithaca College.
