PHILADELPHIA - The first of two regular-season meetings between Temple women's basketball and Saint Joseph's will take place on the Hawks' home court on Wednesday, Feb. 1 at 7:00 p.m. The game will count only toward the Atlantic 10 standings, as the teams meet again in late February for a Big 5 match-up. The Owls (12-8, 5-1) are riding a five-game win streak into Hagan Arena, where they will meet a Saint Joseph's (14-6, 4-2) team that has won nine of its last 11 games.

THE OPENING TIP
•Temple is 5-1 in the Atlantic 10 and riding a five-game win streak, most recently defeating Charlotte by a score of 65-55 this past Sunday and Xavier by a score of 64-38 on Jan. 24.

Shey Peddy and Kristen McCarthy have combined for 82 of the Owls' 129 points in the last two games...McCarthy scored 23 while Peddy scored 22 against Charlotte, and Peddy had 19 while McCarthy had 18 at Xavier.

•Peddy is the reigning A-10 and Big 5 Player of the Week after averaging 20.5 points, 4.5 rebounds and 4.0 assists in two wins last week, also shooting a blistering 58 percent from the field including 8-of-15 from behind the arc.

•The Owls' other three A-10 wins (Richmond, Dayton, Duquesne) all saw the teams separated by just a point in the final minute as Temple has now proven it can hang on in tight games.

•Senior BJ?Williams has led the team in assists in 14 games this season and is currently leading all players in the A-10 with 93 assists (4.9 per game).

•Peddy currently ranks second among all players in the A-10 with 16.4 points per game...She also ranks third in steals with 55 (2.8 per game).

•Saint Joseph's has won nine of its last 11 games, most recently defeating Duquesne, 72-51...Senior Michelle Baker leads the Hawks with 11.0 ppg while four other players are averaging between 8.0 and 9.5 ppg in a well-balanced offense...Senior Kelly Cavallo leads the team with 8.7 rebounds per game, which ranks third among all players in the A-10.

SERIES RECORD
Temple and Saint Joseph's are meeting for the 71st time since the city rivals began playing each other in 1938. Although Saint Joseph's leads the all-time series 39-32, the Owls have won 17 of the last 18 including the last 11 straight. The last few games have proven very competitive, however, including both meetings last season. Temple won 53-43 at home before edging the Hawks 52-49 on the road to clinch the Big 5 Championship. Two years ago Temple got a  58-55 in OT at home and then got another narrow, 58-56 decision at Saint Joseph's.

LAST TIME VS. SAINT JOSEPH'S
After coming back from a seven-point halftime deficit, Temple edged Saint Joseph's 52-49 to win the 2010-11 Big 5 Championship. Then-senior Qwedia Wallace hit Temple's only three-pointer of the game with 25 seconds remaining to turn a one-point lead into four, and after Shey Peddy went 2-of-2 at the free throw line, a last-second three from the Hawks was not enough. Kristen McCarthy led all players with 16 points for Temple, while Wallace finished with 15 and Peddy scored 10.

POSTS STEP UP
Temple has relied heavily on guard play for most of the season and finally got the kind of game it was looking for from its post players in a 72-47 win vs. Penn on Jan. 21. Victoria Macaulay scored a career-high 20 points on 8-of-12 shooting along with grabbing a game-high eight rebounds, while Joelle Connelly scored her Temple career-high with 16 points including 8-of-8 at the line.

MAC ATTACK
Victoria Macaulay had a strong start to the A-10 season on the glass, recording double-digit rebounds in three of Temple's first four conference games. Her performances included a career-high 13 rebounds in a win at Richmond on Jan. 7.

BIGGEST COMEBACK WIN IN TWO YEARS
Temple's 56-55 win in the A-10 opener at Richmond saw the Owls overcome a 14-point deficit en route to the victory. Temple has had plenty of near-comebacks this season and last, but none that resulted in a win since a season-opening victory in 2009-10 when Temple came back from 18 down to defeat Illinois in overtime.

80 FOR CARDOZA
Temple's blowout win vs. Penn on Jan. 21 was the 80th career victory for fourth-year head coach Tonya Cardoza, who now stands at 82-36 overall for a winning percentage of .695.

RIGHT IN IT
Five of TU's losses came in a six-game road swing, and TU lost the first four by an average of only seven. They were within two in the final minute three times (#24/25 Ohio St., N. Illinois and St. John's).

BJ DISTRIBUTION COMPANY
Senior BJ Williams has led the Owls in assists in 14 games so far this season, and has already racked up 93 total assists (4.9 per game) to lead all players in the Atlantic 10.

PEDDY THEFT
Shey Peddy continues to find ways to grab the ball from Temple's opponents, as she leads the team and ranks third in the A-10 this season with 55 steals (2.8 per game). Peddy set the program's all-time record for steals in a single season last year with 104, recording at least one steal in all but one game. Her 3.2 spg a year ago ranked second in the A-10 and tied for 10th in NCAA Division I.

PEDDY NAMED TO NAISMITH WATCH LIST
Shey Peddy was named to the 2011-12 Naismith Trophy Women's early-season watch list, as announced by the Atlanta Tipoff Club. The list includes the 50 top women's college players from 35 schools, and was compiled by the Atlanta Tipoff Club's Board of Selectors, which based its criteria on player performances from the previous year and expectations for the 2012 season.

PEDDY NAMED A-10 PLAYER OF THE WEEK FOR A SECOND TIME
Shey Peddy was named the A-10 Player of the Week for the second time this season on Jan. 30. She averaged 20.5 ppg, 4.5 rpg and 4.0 apg in a a 2-0 week for Temple. She shot an impressive 58 percent from the field (15-for-26) including 8-of-15 from 3-point range (53 percent) and was a perfect 3-for-3 at the line.

Peddy opened the week with a game-high 19 points in a 64-38 win at Xavier on 7-of-9 shooting from the field and 4-of-5 behind the arc, before scoring 22 points in a 65-55 win against Charlotte. Peddy also pulled down seven rebounds and tied for game-high honors with six assists versus the 49ers.

RPI REPORT
Temple is 50th in the RPI of 342 teams. The A-10's top team is St. Bonaventure, ranked 23rd.

McCARTHY MOVES INTO FIFTH ALL-TIME
With a game-high 14 points against Villanova on Dec. 22, Kristen McCarthy moved into fifth place all-time at Temple in career scoring, now with 1,474 points.

McCarthy started the season in 11th place, but advancing further will take some time as Kamesha Hairston ('07) stands in fourth place with 1,573 points (99 ahead of McCarthy).

McCARTHY IS HEAD OF THE CLASS
On Nov. 4, it was announced that Kristen McCarthy was one of 30 candidates selected for the Lowe's 2011-12 Women's Basketball Senior CLASS Award, which recognizes notable achievements in four areas- classroom, character, community and competition. McCarthy was not selected as one of 10 finalists when the list was released on Jan. 25.

NOW THE TEAM TO BEAT
After four years of finishing higher than predicted in the A-10, the Owls are finally picked first in a tie with Dayton. Last year Temple was picked third and ended up second, and two years ago was picked fifth and went on to tie for second.
