PHILADELPHIA - In the Eastern Collegiate Athletic Conference's weekly honor roll, graduate student all-around competitor Katie Canning has been named its Gymnast of the Week.
Canning, who sat out last year to recover from having one of her labrums repaired has showed no signs of losing her luster since returning from her hiatus. The Billerica, Mass. native has been Temple's top-finisher in all-around in each of the two competitions that she has taken part in so far this season.
This past Saturday in a quad-meet at Rutgers, Canning was Temple's top-finisher in two of the four events in which the Owls (190.800) were runners up to Rutgers (192.075), while beating out Southern Connecticut State (186.100) and Ursinus (179.700).
Canning led the Owls in two of the four events she competed. On vault, the fourth-year gymnast scored 9.675 for a third place ranking before also claiming a third place total of 9.600 on uneven parallel bars.
"It's been great to have Katie [Canning] back and doing all-around," head coach Aaron Murphy said. "Her form is back to what is was before she left us to recover last year and I think this award is a true recognition for how great she has been this soon since returning."
Rounding out the rest of the ECAC's awards for the week were Co-Rookies of the Week Amber Woo of the University of Pennsylvania and Joyce Li of Yale. Picking up Specialist of the Week was Penn's Dana Bonincontri, while William & Mary's Caitlyn Cook Furr was the Coaches' Choice Award for the week ending date of Jan. 30.
