FAIRFAX, Va. –
A month-long hiatus on the indoor track and field schedule concluded for the Temple Owls on Saturday when they went to George Mason University to compete in their first meet of 2012 at the Father Diamond Meet.

The Owls had another satisfying meet, having top finishes in four events.

“Overall this was a good day and a strong meet for us,” head coach Eric Mobley said. “When you look at our results from today and compare them to the ones from last season at this time, it's clear how much better we are right now. It's great to get the season off with good day like this. The intensity from our team was there and we look forward to increasing that as we move on.”

In the 4x800 meter relay, Temple's 'A' team, comprised of Tonney Smith, Tashima Stephens, Shanel Golding and Sheina Roberts earned first place with an ECAC qualifying time of 9:21.14, which was 11 seconds ahead of runner-up George Mason 'C'.

For the second straight event, freshman Margo Britton took first place ahead of teammate Alana Owens in shot put with another ECAC qualifying throw that went 14.07 meters. Owens was the top-finisher in the weight throw for the second time in as many events of her collegiate career, as her throw went 15.98 meters, which was just .02 meters off from meeting ECAC qualifying standards.

First-year runner Kiersten Laroche had some of the most impressive results for the Owls with her first place tie in the high jump, which was 1.62 meters. Later on Laroche landed herself in second place in the long jump, in which she jumped 5.47 meters.

Freshman Jenna Dubrow, who set a school record in the 3000 meter run in the team's last meet, recorded a fourth place finish on Saturday in the 1 mile run with an impressive time of 5:11.74.

A cluster of Owls placed within the top four in the 3000 meter run, as Sarah Rutter (11:06.71), Taylor Goldsworthy (11:09.71) and Deirdre MacFarlane (11:15.62) came second, third and fourth, respectively, to place behind Virginia State's Taylor-Ashley Bean.

Jade Wilson placed fourth in the 60 meter hurdles in a time of 9.22 before helping Temple 'A' take fifth place (3:55.55) in the 4x400 meter relay along with Tessa West, Michelle Timothy-Davis and Ambrosia Iwugo. The 'B' squad, which was comprised of Tashima Stephens, Sheina Roberts, Tonney Smith and Shanel Golding, placed eighth in the event with a time of 3:59.43.

Isatta Kenneth opened the day for Temple in the 60 meter dash. In the preliminary running of the event, Kenneth was the fifth-fastest with a time of 7.78 to qualify for the main event, where she took a seventh place sprint time of 7.84, which was only .16 past ECAC standards

Temple's season now picks up at a more consistent pace as the Owls will now head to the 168th Armory in New York on Friday, Jan. 13 for the NYC Gotham Cup.
