10.15.12 | Football, Brandon McManus: All-American Candidate
PROVIDENCE – Temple senior PK/P Brandon McManus (Hatfield, Pa.) has been named the BIG EAST Specialist of the Week, the Conference announced on Monday.
Temple senior RB Montel Harris (Jacksonville, Fla.) and true freshman LB Tyler Matakevich (Stratford, Conn.) were also named to the BIG EAST's five-man Honor Roll.
In Saturday's 17-14 overtime win at Connecticut, McManus made an extra point with 19 seconds remaining in regulation to tie the game and force overtime. He nailed a 29-yard field goal in overtime to give the Owls their second overtime win in school history and first back-to-back wins in BIG EAST play in school history.
Against the Huskies, McManus also punted eight times for 341 yards (42.6 average) and kicked off three times for 195 yards (65.0 average) and a touchback.
McManus was also honored with National Specialist of the Week honors by the College Football Performance Awards on Sunday and with ESPN Helmet Stickers.
The BIG EAST honor is the third for McManus this season and fourth for an Owl. Harris earned Offensive Player of the Week honors on Oct. 8.
Harris, who recorded his second consecutive 100-yard performance with the Owls, led the rushers with 142 yards and a 24-yard TD run. He also returned four punts for 21 yards, his first action on special teams for the Owls. Harris leads the nation with 24 total 100-yard games in his career (2 at Temple, 22 at Boston College). He also earned BIG EAST Helmet Stickers from ESPN for the second consecutive week
Matakevich made his second career start and led all players with a career-high 19 tackles and a break-up in the win over UConn. The true freshman is one of 18 Temple freshmen to play this fall.
Temple (3-2, 2-0 BIG EAST) hosts No. 19/17 Rutgers (6-0, 3-0) on Oct. 20 in a Noon game at Lincoln Financial Field in Breast Cancer Awareness Day. The BIG EAST Network (shown locally on 6ABC) will televise the game nationally.
