10.17.12 | Men's Golf
PHILADELPHIA – Temple University freshman Brandon Matthews was named the Atlantic 10 Men's Golf Rookie of the Week for the week of October 10-16. It marks the fourth time this fall that the Owl rookie has earned the honor. He also was named A10 Player of the Week once.
Matthews, a native of DuPont, Pa., won his second tournament in the five he has competed in thus far, capturing the Philadelphia Big 5 Invitational on October 14. The Temple freshman carded a one-under 69 on the final round, sinking a 15-foot putt for par on the 18th hole to win the tournament by one stroke. He was the only golfer in the 19-team field to break par in the two-day invitational held at Philmont Country Club in Huntingdon Valley, Pa.
His five-over par 145 score for the two rounds helped the Owls win the Big 5 Championship portion of the event as Temple bested Villanova by one stroke. Overall TU placed fifth among the 19 competing schools.
Temple concludes its fall season next weekend (10/21-22) at the St. Barnabas Health Intercollegiate in Chatham, NJ.
