Women's Rowing Opens Season at Navy Day Regatta

PHILADELPHIA- Temple University Women's Rowing kicked off its fall season Saturday, October 13th on Schuylkill River at the Historic Navy Day Regatta. The Owls had a strong showing at the race, highlighted by the Frosh/Novice 4+ second place finish.  It was the Owls' first race under the new head coach Rebecca Smith Grzybowski.

“We rowed pretty even lineups and almost everyone got the chance to race twice, so it was a really good opportunity to gauge our fitness,” said Grzybowski.  “I was pleased with how the entire team rose to the challenge and it was a solid start to the season."

In the Collegiate 4+ the Owls boat “A” comprised of  Eleanor Oken (coxswain), Victoria Joye (stroke), Claudia Loeber (seat 3), Joanna Sutor (seat 2) and Kara Carson (bow) finished 3rd with a time of 16:42.42.  Following behind was the Owls boat “B” comprised of Kelsey Franks (coxswain), Brittany Adell (stroke), Jeanine Lees (seat 3), Allison Watkins (2 seat) and Angela Flinn (bow) finishing in 9th place in the finals. UPenn went on to win the race with a time of 16:15.90.

Later in the morning the Junior Varsity 8+ finals began. The Owls “A” boat comprised of Erin Matz (coxswain), Moira Meekes (stroke), Stephanie Pennypacker (seat 7), Sarah Barber (seat 6), Lauren Kidd (seat 5), Megan Boyer( seat 4), Kathy Bostion (seat 3), Lily Papaleo (seat 2) and Samantha Deegan (bow). The Owls “B” boat was comprised of  Katie Cardwell (coxswain), Laura Turner(stroke) Gina Inverso (seat 7), Kelly Hill (seat 6), Calista DiGuardia (seat 5), Annie Buckley (seat 5), Mary Kathleen Logue(3 seat), Grace Kroner (seat 2) , Susan Coyne (bow) participated. The boats finished 9th and 10th, respectively.

The Owls had success in their third race of the day, the Frosh/Novice 4+. The boat, led by Rachel Bookman (coxswain), included Kroner (stroke), Barber (seat 3), Papaleo (seat 2) and DiGuardia at bow, finished second with a time of 18:13.28.

To finish the day, two Temple boats competed in the Open/Collegiate 8+. The Owls “B” boat comprised of Cardwell (coxswain),  Joye (stroke), Lees (seat 7),  Sutor (seat 6), Pennypacker (seat 5),  Hill (seat 4), Kidd (3 seat), Meekes (2 seat) and Coyne (bow) finished in 11th place with a time of 16:09.10.  The Owls “A” boat  comprised of Oken (coxswain), Carson (stroke), Loeber (seat 7),  Adell ( seat 6), Gina Inverso (seat 5), Watkins (seat 4), Logue (seat 3), Turner (seat 2) and Flinn (bow) , finished 11 seconds behind their teammates to place 13th.

The Owls travel to Boston on October 20th to compete at the Head of the Charles Regatta.
