Game Notes vs. Northeastern (PDF)

PHILADELPHIA - The first game of a Temple doubleheader on Saturday, Nov. 17 has the Temple women's basketball team facing Northeastern at 5:00 p.m. in the Liacouras Center. Following the women's game, the men's team will take on Rice at 8:00 p.m. Fans not able to make the Northeastern game can watch live stats HERE. (Due to technical difficulties, there will be no webcast).

The Owls are 2-1 overall on the young season, and Saturday's game marks the second in a three-game homestand. Temple will face long-time rival Rutgers on Wednesday, Nov. 21 at McGonigle Hall at 7:00 p.m. Northeastern is 1-1 after a narrow loss to Eastern Michigan and a big win over La Salle.

THE OPENING TIP
•Temple is looking for a 2-0 week after already earning a 54-38 win vs. Seton Hall on Wednesday...The Owls are in the midst of a three-game homestand, with Saturday's game marking the second of the three.
•Senior center Victoria Macaulay notched her second double-double in three games with a game-high 16 points to go with a game-high 13 rebounds in the win over Seton Hall.
•The Owls played #18/19 Nebraska on Nov. 11 and lost 64-39...Led by freshman Erica Covile with 10 points, Temple hung with the Cornhuskers in the second half but could not overcome a big first-half deficit.
•In the season opener on Nov. 9, Temple defeated Montana, 55-41...The Owls were led by Macaulay who tied her career high with 21 points while also grabbing a career-high 16 rebounds.
•The Owls had hit at least one three-pointer in 100 straight games, dating back to the first game of the 2009-10 season, but had that streak snapped when they did not hit a single trey at Nebraska.
•Fifth-year head coach Tonya Cardoza has a record of 95-39 and is just five wins away from reaching the 100-win milestone.
•Macaulay was selected to the Preseason Atlantic 10 First Team and Preseason Atlantic 10 All-Defensive Team.
•The Owls were picked to finish fifth of 16 teams in the 2012-13 A-10 Preseason Poll.
•The Owls will play a total of three non-conference games vs. teams that had RPI's under 50 last year: Rutgers, Nebraska and Georgetown, as well as Michigan State (RPI 62).
•Temple has six freshmen on a roster of 11, making the Owls the second-most inexperienced team in NCAA Division I women's basketball this season.
•Temple finished the 2011-12 season at 23-10 overall and won 20 or more games for a ninth straight season.
•The Owls finished the A-10 season in second place at 13-1, and had won 14 straight before having that streak snapped in a 66-63 loss to Dayton in the A-10 Semifinals.
•Northeastern is 1-1 so far, and coming off a big, 76-45 win at La Salle on Thursday night.

MACAULAY DOUBLES UP AGAIN
For the second time in three games, senior center Victoria Macaulay notched a double-double in the Owls' win over Seton Hall on Nov. 14. She added 13 rebounds to 16 points, hitting 5-of-7 from the field and 6-of-8 at the line. In Temple's season-opening win vs. Montana, Macaulay pulled down a career-high 16 rebounds while tying her career high with 21 points.

SCOUTING NORTHEASTERN
The Huskies narrowly lost their season opener, 60-57 to Eastern Michigan, but rebounded in a big way for a 76-45 win at La Salle on Nov. 15. Northeastern returned three of its top four scorers from last season's 8-22 team, led by senior Deanna Kerkhof who averaged 14.4 ppg.

FRONTCOURT SHINES IN SEASON OPENER
The Owls pulled down 48 rebounds in their season-opening win over Montana on Nov. 9, a number they exceeded only twice in all of the 2011-12 season.

Temple's style is less guard-oriented than in the last few years, and the frontcourt shined with the three starting post players combining for 31 rebounds. Senior Victoria Macaulay led the charge with a career-high 16 boards, and Temple out-rebounded Montana 48-31.

FRESHMEN LEAD AT NEBRASKA
In their first-ever game against a nationally-ranked opponent, two of the Owls' freshmen had strong showings. Erica Covile led Temple with 10 points on 5-of-6 shooting at #18/19 Nebraska on Nov. 11, also pulling down six boards and leading the team with two steals. Sally Kabengano grabbed a team-best nine rebounds and scored eight points in the contest.

TRULY CARDOZA'S TEAM
With this now being her fifth year at Temple, head coach Tonya Cardoza has a team composed entirely of her own recruits for the first time in her career.

PRESEASON HONORS FOR MACAULAY
Temple's lone senior, Victoria Macaulay, was named to the Atlantic 10 Preseason First Team as well as to the Atlantic 10 Preseason All-Defensive Team. The preseason awards and rankings were a result of voting by the league's 16 head coaches. Macaulay led the team with 7.5 rebounds per game last year, and was third with 9.7 points per game.

THREE-POINT STREAK ENDS
The final game of the 2008-09 season had marked the last time Temple had not hit at least one three-pointer in a game, until the Owls' recent loss at #18/19 Nebraska on Nov. 11. The streak lasted for exactly 100 games.

LAST TIME OUT VS. NORTHEASTERN
Scoring 40 points on 27 Northeastern turnovers, the Owls earned a 72-54 road win against the Huskies on Nov. 15, 2011 in Boston. With her Boston home crowd supporting her, then-senior Shey Peddy led all players with 20 points including 4-of-8 behind the arc. Two other players no longer on the roster, Brittany Lewis and Kristen McCarthy, scored 18 and 16 points, respectively.

Jewel Tunstall led Northeastern with 16 points and six rebounds. The Huskies also got 14 points from Deanna Kerkhof and 11 from Jamie Conroy.

Although Temple shot just 41 percent from the field to Northeastern's 47.5 percent and was also out-rebounded 33-30, the Owls' 14 steals made the difference as the Huskies finished with just six.

RUTGERS ON DECK
Temple and Rutgers, long-time region rivals, will be playing their final non-conference game against each other when the Scarlet Knights visit Philadelphia next Wednesday night. Rutgers leads the all-time series against Temple, 34-11, but the Owls had won two in a row before losing in Piscataway last season.

YOUTH IN SPADES
Based on input from Division I women's basketball sports information directors around the country, Temple has been determined to be the second-most inexperienced team in NCAA DI.

The information, collected by UIC's Mike Laninga, took the total number of years of experience on a team and divided it by the number of current players on the roster. Temple's players have an average of 0.727 years of experience to tie for second with SIU-Carbondale. San Jose State came in at number one with an average of 0.44 years per player. The Owls are not alone in the Atlantic 10, as Dayton and Rhode Island are among others tied for sixth on the list, and Butler is tied for 16th.

INTERNATIONAL FLAVOR
Two members of this year's team have the unique distinction of being the first players not from North America since at least 1980 if not all-time. While four Owls since 1980 have hailed from Ontario, Canada, no others have been from overseas. Freshman May Dayan hails from Ashdod, Israel, and freshman Sally Kabengano calls Stockholm, Sweden, her home. Both played for national teams in their home countries, and both have started in every game for the Owls so far.
