Men's Soccer Goes For Win No. 10 And Looks To Improve A-10 Tourney Seeding On Senior Day Against Saint Joseph's
11.2.12 | Men's Soccer
PHILADELPHIA—With a spot in next week's A-10 Tournament in Charlotte already locked up, Temple Men's Soccer will be looking to improve their seeding when they host their conference travel partner, the Saint Joseph's Hawks, Saturday at 1:00 p.m. at the Ambler Sports Complex in both team's second and final Philadelphia Soccer Six match of the season.
TEMPLE NOTES...
Temple (9-5-3, 5-1-1) is undefeated in 10 of its last 12 games and is working to reach at least 10 wins for the fourth time under 13-year head coach David MacWilliams and for the first time since 2008. Prior to Saturday's kickoff, Temple Athletics will honor the team's four seniors: Cody Calafiore, Andrew Dodds, Billy Kappock and Homero Rodriguez at 12:45 p.m.
Following a five-point weekend at Fordham and La Salle a week ago, freshman Jared Martinelli received three awards for his efforts. On Monday, the A-10 tabbed the Mechanicsburg, Pa. native with his fourth Rookie of the Week honor, before the Philadelphia Soccer Six named Martinelli its Player of the Week and their Rookie of the Week, also for the fourth time this season.
Having 28 points on the year, Martinelli is ranked 15th in the nation in the category, while also holding the 20th-best points per game at 1.65. Martinelli is currently tied for 8th on Temple's all-time list for points in a single season. On the all-time rookie ranks at Temple, the freshman midfielder is already third all-time for points by a first-year player donning the Cherry & White. Only Charles Ducilli (44) and Ryan Haney (32) have had more points in a rookie campaign at Temple.
With 10 assists on the year, Martinelli and junior Vaughn Spurrier are tied for 5th in the nation in the category, while being ranked in a tie for 7th for assists per game (0.59).
So far through 17 games, the Owls have tallied seven shutouts, which is the most the program has collected since 2008 when it had nine. Sophomore Dan Scheck started both games last weekend, as he secured shutouts in both matches at Fordham and La Salle. In seven starts this season, Scheck has conceded just twice and has pitched four clean sheets in net.
SAINT JOSEPH'S NOTES...
The Hawks (5-10-2, 1-5-2) close out their 2012 campaign today, looking to go out on a high note, as they try to win for the first time since Oct. 14 when they pulled out an overtime victory at Rhode Island. Saint Joseph's is coming off a two-point weekend, by virtue of battling to a pair of ties against La Salle and Fordham.
Leading the way for the Hawks this season has been Tim Lazorko with his five goals and five assists through 16 games. Alex Critzos is tied for the team lead in goals with five of his own. Andrew D'Ottavi has made 16 starts in the team's 17 games, allowing him to collect three shutouts on the year along with a goals against average of 1.76 with 91 saves.
ALL-TIME SERIES...
Temple holds a commanding edge in the all-time series, owning a record of 35-13-7 since the rivalry began in 1958.
