Teams hope to teach disabled children sport of a lifetime
PHILADELPHIA – The Temple men's and women's tennis teams have developed a relationship with the Widener Memorial School in North Philadelphia, working with students with disabilities at the school throughout the year in an after-school program.
The Widener Memorial School is a K-12 school with a vision to uphold a productive atmosphere where students with various physical and medical disabilities successfully acquire skills and attitudes to ensure their fullest individual potential in school and in society.
The goal for the TU teams is to teach the students a sport of a lifetime, while also learning valuable life lessons themselves.
“This is a great experience for us to help other kids who are not as privileged as we are,” said senior men's team captain Kacper Rams. “We have a chance to try to bring some smiles and happiness to the kids who have to struggle every day. By helping at the school, our perception of what "struggle" means has changed drastically and has helped us to better appreciate the opportunities that we have.”
Members of the women's team feel equally as rewarded by the experience.
“When we give back to the community by working with kids it enables us to grow closer as a team,” commented junior women's player Jordan Batey. “We all have to work together with the students from the school so that they can learn more about tennis. The personal attention given to the kids reminds us how important it is to remember that we have so much to be thankful for. Some of these kids would love to be able to do the things we do each day without worrying about their disability getting in the way. This motivates the team to do all that we can to help them to succeed in whatever area they desire.”
The teams will continue to work with the students from the Widener School throughout the 2012-13 academic year.
