THE OPENING TIP
•The Owls are now on game two of a six-game road swing, and will not play at home again until January 7.
•Temple is coming off a particulary disappointing loss at Kent State (71-62 on Dec. 6), a team that had come into the game with a record of 0-7...The Owls did get a fifth double-double from senior Victoria Macaulay with 25 points and 13 rebounds.
•Prior to the recent loss, the Owls had back-to-back impressive wins, over eight-time defending MAC champ Bowling Green (70-56), and previously undefeated Syracuse (74-67)...The Orange were receiving many votes in both national polls prior to the game.
•Fifth-year head coach Tonya Cardoza has a record of 98-41 and is just two wins away from reaching the 100-win milestone.
•The Owls scored a then-season high 70 points at Bowling Green and improved upon that with 74 points vs. Syracuse...The win over the Orange included a 49-point second half that helped the Owls erase a 14-point halftime deficit.
•Four players scored in double figures vs. Syracuse and two recorded double-doubles...Macaulay notched her fourth double-double of the season with 20 points and 11 rebounds to lead Temple.
•Temple currently ranks third among all teams in the Atlantic 10 in field goal percentage defense at .340.
•Temple has six freshmen on a roster of 11, making the Owls the second-most inexperienced team in NCAA Division I women's basketball this season (San Jose State is in the top spot).
•Auburn is 7-2 so far and has won the last four straight, most recently with a 69-59 win at A-10 school George Washington on Dec. 12...It was the 150th career win for head coach Terri Williams-Flournoy, who is in her first season with the Tigers.
SCOUTING AUBURN
The Tigers are 7-2 overall after a fourth straight win on Dec. 12 at George Washington, 69-59. Six of their first nine games were played away from home. The win at GW was the 150th career victory for first-year Auburn head coach Terri Williams-Flournoy. Three players are averaging in double figures in scoring for the Tigers, led by Hasina Muhammad with 16.4 ppg. Auburn has handled the ball fairly well so far this season, averaging just 15.7 turnovers per game compared to 22.3 turnovers per game by its opponents.
ALL-TIME SERIES VS. AUBURN
This will mark the seventh meeting between Temple and Auburn, but only the last four of those are recent. The Owls have a had a good run in the series of late, winning the last three in 2009, 2010 and 2011. Auburn's last win came on its home court in 2008. One year ago, Temple defeated the Tigers 73-57 in Philadelphia. The last meeting in Auburn was a nailbiter, with the Owls pulling out the 62-61 victory on Dec. 4, 2010.
ORANGE SQUEEZED BY OWLS
After erasing a 14-point, 39-25 halftime deficit, the Owls handed Syracuse its first loss of the season on Dec. 2 in McGonigle Hall. Temple scored 49 points in the second half on 58 percent shooting, and led by as many as eight in the final minutes. Four players scored in double figures, led by Victoria Macaulay with 20 points and 11 rebounds. Rateska Brown, later named the A-10 co-Player of the Week, scored 19 points off the bench, and Tyonna Williams notched her first career double-double with 14 points to go with a career-high 11 assists. The fourth double-digit scorer was Natasha Thames with 10.
SECOND-HALF SURGE
In seven of Temple's eight games so far this season, the Owls have scored more points in the second half than in the first. In those seven games, the Owls had 164 first-half points compared to 241 second-half points. They won the only game in which they were tied at halftime (vs. Montana). While a big second half was not enough to overcome deficits at Nebraska and against Rutgers, it was more than enough against Syracuse as the Owls out-scored the Orange 49-28 in the second half to erase a 14-point halftime deficit.
MACAULAY TAKING CHARGE
Along with leading the team in a number of categories on the stat sheet, senior center Victoria Macaulay ranks in the top five among all Atlantic 10 players in six areas. She is averaging 16.6 ppg (4th), 10.1 rpg (T-3rd), 54.6 percent from the field (2nd), 2.0 blocks per game (T-3rd), 7.5 def. rpg (2nd) and 35.0 minutes per game (4th).
MACAULAY DOUBLES UP FIVE TIMES
For the fifth time in the Owls' first eight games, senior center Victoria Macaulay notched a double-double in the Owls' loss at Kent State on Dec. 6. She scored a game-high 25 points to go with a game-high 13 rebounds. In Temple's win vs. Syracuse on Dec. 2, she scored a game-high 20 points to go with a game-high 11 rebounds. On Nov. 17 vs. Northwestern, Macaulay scored a career-high 27 points to go with 10 boards. Against Seton Hall on Nov. 14, she added 13 boards to 16 points, and in Temple's season-opening win vs. Montana, Macaulay pulled down a career-high 16 rebounds while scoring 21 points.
SECOND CHANCES
Temple is averaging 7.4 more rebounds per game than its opponents, but is leading opponents on the offensive glass just 110-106 overall. However, it is the Owls taking the most advantage of those second chances. Temple has 89 second-chance points this season compared to 64 for its opponents. The difference was most notable in the Owls' win over Syracuse, as they recorded 22 second-chance points compared to 13 for the Orange.
FIRST BIG 5 GAME ON DECK
With the ever-changing conference landscape, the one constant for five Philadelphia schools is the chance to win a Big 5 title each year. Temple's first Big 5 game is next Friday, Dec. 21 at defending champ Villanova. The Wildcats are already 2-0 with wins over La Salle and Saint Joseph's.
