It is the fourth in a six-game road swing for the Owls (5-5) who face a strong team in the Spartans, currently receiving votes in the AP Poll at 11-1.
THE OPENING TIP
•The Owls are now on the fourth game of a six-game road swing...They will not play at home again until January 7.
•Temple has lost three straight, most recently suffering a 55-44 defeat at Villanova in the Owls' first Philadelphia Big 5 game of the season...Senior Victoria Macaulay led all players with 17 points.
•The Owls' most recent two losses were to teams with strong records, Villanova (9-1) and Auburn (8-2)...The first of the three losse was a particulary disappointing one at the hands of Kent State, a team that had come into the game with a record of 0-7.
•Senior center Victoria Macaulay has recorded five double-doubles, most recently with 25 points and 13 rebounds at Kent State.
•Macaulay currently ranks in a tie for 17th among all Division I players with her five double-doubles, and ranks 27th among all DI players in field-goal percentage (.571) which also leads all players in the Atlantic 10.
•Prior to Dec. 6, the Owls had back-to-back impressive wins, over eight-time defending MAC champ Bowling Green (70-56), and previously undefeated Syracuse (74-67)...The Orange were receiving many votes in both national polls prior to the game.
•Fifth-year head coach Tonya Cardoza has a record of 98-42 and is just two wins away from reaching the 100-win milestone.
•Turnovers have proven costly for the Owls, who have committed over 20 of them in six of 10 games...In the 2011-12 season, Temple committed more than 20 turnovers a total of just four times.
•Temple has six freshmen on a roster of 11, making the Owls the second-most inexperienced team in NCAA Division I women's basketball this season (San Jose State is in the top spot).
•Michigan State has had an impressive start to the season at 11-1, most recently with a 50-48 overtime win vs. Texas Tech at the South Point Hoops Holiday Classic in Las Vegas...The Spartans' only loss was to #18 Dayton, now ranked 15th.
SCOUTING MICHIGAN STATE
The Spartans are off to an impressive start at 11-1, with their lone loss coming to now-15th ranked Dayton. Most recently, Michigan State went 2-0 at the South Point Holiday Hoops Classic in Las Vegas, including a 49-35 win vs. Oregon State and a 50-48 overtime win vs. Texas Tech. Five players are averaging over 10 points per game for Michigan State, led by junior guard Klarissa Bell with 12.7 ppg to go with 5.8 rpg. Redshirt senior forward Courtney Schiffauer leads the team on the glass with 7.6 rpg.
ALL-TIME SERIES VS. MICHIGAN STATE
Michigan State and Temple are meeting for just the third time, and the Spartans took each of the previous two contests. The teams have not faced each other for nine years, since Michigan State earned a 78-40 win at home against the Owls on Nov. 23, 2003.
OWLS FALL IN FIRST BIG 5 GAME
With the ever-changing conference landscape, the one constant for five Philadelphia schools is the chance to win a Big 5 title each year. Temple's game at defending Big 5 champ Villanova was its first of the year, but ended with a loss while the Wildcats are now 3-0 with wins over La Salle and Saint Joseph's as well. The Owls finished second to Villanova a year ago, and won the Big 5 title the year before that.
MACAULAY TAKING CHARGE
Along with leading the team in a number of categories on the stat sheet, senior center Victoria Macaulay ranks in the top five among all Atlantic 10 players in six areas. She leads all players in the A-10 with a field-goal percentage of 57.1, is averaging 16.8 ppg (3rd), 9.4 rpg (5th), 2.1 blocks per game (3rd), 7.1 def. rpg (2nd) and 35.6 minutes per game (4th).
ORANGE SQUEEZED BY OWLS
After erasing a 14-point, 39-25 halftime deficit, the Owls handed Syracuse its first loss of the season on Dec. 2 in McGonigle Hall. Temple scored 49 points in the second half on 58 percent shooting, and led by as many as eight in the final minutes. Four players scored in double figures, led by Victoria Macaulay with 20 points and 11 rebounds. Rateska Brown, later named the A-10 co-Player of the Week, scored 19 points off the bench, and Tyonna Williams notched her first career double-double with 14 points to go with a career-high 11 assists. The fourth double-digit scorer was Natasha Thames with 10.
SECOND-HALF SURGE
In eight of Temple's 10 games so far this season, the Owls have scored more points in the second half than in the first. In those eight games, the Owls have scored 181 first-half points compared to 273 second-half points. They won the only game in which they were tied at halftime (vs. Montana). While a big second half was not enough to overcome deficits vs. Nebraska, Rutgers and Auburn, it was more than enough against Syracuse as the Owls out-scored the Orange 49-28 in the second half to erase a 14-point halftime deficit.
MACAULAY DOUBLES UP FIVE TIMES
For the fifth time in the Owls' first eight games, senior center Victoria Macaulay notched a double-double in the Owls' loss at Kent State on Dec. 6. She scored a game-high 25 points to go with a game-high 13 rebounds. In Temple's win vs. Syracuse on Dec. 2, she scored a game-high 20 points to go with a game-high 11 rebounds. On Nov. 17 vs. Northwestern, Macaulay scored a career-high 27 points to go with 10 boards. Against Seton Hall on Nov. 14, she added 13 boards to 16 points, and in Temple's season-opening win vs. Montana, Macaulay pulled down a career-high 16 rebounds while scoring 21 points.
TURNING OVER POINTS
The Owls have struggled to handle the ball so far this season, and their opponents have taken advantage. Temple's opponents have scored 238 points off turnovers (an average of 23.8 per game) while the Owls have averaged just 12.1 ppg off opponent turnovers (121 total). After committing more than 20 turnovers just four times in all of the 2011-12 season, the Owls have now done so in six of 10 games to start the 2012-13 season.
BIG 5 PLAYER OF THE WEEK
The Philadelphia Big 5 honored Victoria Macaulay with the Big 5 Women's Basketball Player of the Week award on Dec. 17. Macaulay shot 8-of-11 from the floor en route to a game-high 18 points in a setback at Auburn. She grabbed six rebounds, blocked three shots, and had three steals while playing all 40 minutes.
YOUTH IN SPADES
Based on input from Division I women's basketball sports information directors, Temple has been determined to be the second-most inexperienced team in NCAA DI.
The information, collected by UIC's Mike Laninga, took the total number of years of experience on a team and divided it by the number of current players on the roster. Temple's players have an average of 0.727 years of experience to tie for second with SIU-Carbondale. San Jose State came in at number one with an average of 0.44 years per player. The Owls are not alone in the Atlantic 10, as Dayton and Rhode Island are among others tied for sixth on the list, and Butler is tied for 16th.
