Women's Basketball Set for a Pair of Games in Washington, D.C., to Start the New Year

1.1.13 | Women's Basketball

Game Notes l Georgetown Live Stats l Howard Live Stats

PHILADELPHIA - The new year will begin in Washington, D.C., for the Temple women's basketball team, as the Owls (5-6) head to the nation's capital to take on Georgetown (8-4) and Howard (5-6). First up for Temple is a 7:00 p.m. game at Georgetown on Wednesday, Jan. 2, and the trip will conclude with a 7:00 p.m. contest at Howard on Friday, Jan. 4.

THE OPENING TIP
•The Owls are now on the fifth game of a six-game road swing...They will not play at home again until January 7, making it 36 total days without a home game...The road has not been good to the Owls, who are 1-5 away from home this season.
•Temple has lost four straight, most recently suffering a 57-47 loss at Michigan State...Senior center Victoria Macaulay led the Owls with 12 points and 10 rebounds, notching her sixth double-double of the season.
•The Owls' most recent three losses were to teams with strong records, Michigan State (12-1), Villanova (9-1) and Auburn (8-2)...The first of the four losses was a particulary disappointing one at the hands of Kent State, a team that had come into the game with a record of 0-7.
•Macaulay has recorded six double-doubles which ranks second among all players in the Atlantic 10.
•Macaulay currently ranks in a tie for 22nd among all Division I players with her six double-doubles, and ranks 25th among all DI players in field-goal percentage (.549) which also leads all players in the Atlantic 10.
•Prior to Dec. 6, the Owls had back-to-back impressive wins, over eight-time defending MAC champ Bowling Green (70-56), and previously undefeated Syracuse (74-67)...The Orange were receiving many votes in both national polls prior to the game.
•Fifth-year head coach Tonya Cardoza has a record of 98-43 and is just two wins away from reaching the 100-win milestone.
•Turnovers have proven costly for the Owls, who have committed over 20 of them in six of 11 games...In the 2011-12 season, Temple committed more than 20 turnovers a total of just four times.
•Temple has six freshmen on a roster of 11, making the Owls the second-most inexperienced team in NCAA Division I women's basketball this season (San Jose State is in the top spot).
•Georgetown is 8-4 overall and most recently got a 90-67 win vs. Yale...The Hoyas have two losses to nationally-ranked teams (Penn State and Cal), as well as a win over then nationally-ranked Delaware (62-56 on Nov. 11).
•Senior guard Sugar Rodgers recently became the first player in program history at Georgetown to reach the 2,000-point total for her career...She is averaging 25.9 points per game and has scored 30 or more points on four occasions this season.
•Howard is 5-6 overall and will not play again before facing Temple...The Bison most recently lost 67-50 to #24 Ohio State.

SCOUTING GEORGETOWN
Georgetown is 8-4 overall under first-year head coach Keith Brown (the team's top assistant for five years) and most recently got a 90-67 win vs. Yale. The Hoyas have two losses to nationally-ranked teams (Penn State and Cal), as well as a win over then nationally-ranked Delaware (62-56 on Nov. 11). Senior guard Sugar Rodgers recently became the first player in program history at Georgetown to reach the 2,000-point total for her career. She is averaging 25.9 points per game and has scored 30 or more points on four occasions this season. Rodgers also leads the team with 7.3 rebounds per game.

ALL-TIME SERIES VS. GEORGETOWN
Georgetown and Temple are meeting for the fifth time. While the Hoyas hold a 3-1 lead in the series, the most recent meeting was back in December of 1994 at the Vermont Howard Bank Classic. The only win for the Owls came at home in 1982 by a score of 89-70.

COMING UP NEXT:?SCOUTING HOWARD
The Bison are 5-6 heading into the game against Temple on Jan. 4. Their most recent game was a 67-50 loss at #24 Ohio State, but Howard has won five of its last seven games overall. Saadia Doyle leads the Bison, averaging close to 22 points per game along with nine rebounds per game. Niki Reid Geckeler is in her fourth season as head coach at Howard, and led the Bison to the WNIT in 2011-12 where they lost in overtime to Virginia. Howard was picked to finish first in the MEAC after finishing second last year.

ALL-TIME SERIES VS. HOWARD
Although Temple leads the all-time series 2-0 over Howard, the two teams last met in 1983. The Owls earned their first win in 1981, and both games were held at neutral sites.

TWO BIG WINS LOOKING BETTER AND BETTER
Two of the Owls' wins this season, which were big even at the time, are looking better and better as the season goes on. Temple defeated Syracuse on Dec. 6 to hand the Orangewomen their first loss, and it remains the only loss for Syracuse, now 12-1 as of the end of December. Temple also defeated Bowling Green on Nov. 28, handing the Falcons what is still their only home loss of the season. BGU is now 9-3, and recently handed #14/15 Dayton its first loss of the year by a wide margin, 65-40.

COMEBACK FALLS SHORT AT MICHIGAN STATE
After trailing by as many as 15 points to Michigan State on Dec. 29, the Owls made a run down the stretch to narrow the gap to as few as six points after an 8-0 run. Freshman Meghan Roxas came up huge off the bench, hitting three shots from behind the arc for a career-high nine points. Her final trey with two minutes remaining turned out to be the last bucket for Temple, while the Spartans went 4-of-4 at the line in the final minute to hold off the Owls.

MACAULAY TAKING CHARGE
Along with leading the team in a number of categories on the stat sheet, senior center Victoria Macaulay ranks in the top five among all Atlantic 10 players in six areas. She leads all players in the A-10 with a field-goal percentage of 54.9, is averaging 16.4 ppg (4th), 9.5 rpg (5th), 1.9 blocks per game (4th), 7.4 def. rpg (2nd) and 35.3 minutes per game (5th).

Her numbers are particularly impressive when compared to the rest of her career. She averaged 3.0 ppg as a freshman, 4.6 ppg as a sophomore and 9.7 ppg as a junior.

SECOND-HALF SURGE
In nine of Temple's 11 games so far this season, the Owls have scored more points in the second half than in the first. In those nine games, the Owls have scored 203 first-half points compared to 298 second-half points. They won the only game in which they were tied at halftime (vs. Montana). While a big second half was not enough to overcome deficits vs. Nebraska, Rutgers, Auburn and Michigan State, it was more than enough against Syracuse as the Owls out-scored the Orange 49-28 in the second half to erase a 14-point halftime deficit.

MACAULAY DOUBLES UP SIX TIMES
For the sixth time in the Owls' first 11 games, senior center Victoria Macaulay notched a double-double in the Owls' loss at Michigan State on Dec. 29. She scored 12 points to go with 10 rebounds, both team-highs. She scored a game-high 25 points to go with a game-high 13 rebounds at Kent State on Dec. 6, and in Temple's win vs. Syracuse on Dec. 2, she scored a game-high 20 points to go with a game-high 11 rebounds. On Nov. 17 vs. Northwestern, Macaulay scored a career-high 27 points to go with 10 boards. Against Seton Hall on Nov. 14, she added 13 boards to 16 points, and in Temple's season-opening win vs. Montana, Macaulay pulled down a career-high 16 rebounds while scoring 21 points.

TURNING OVER POINTS
The Owls have struggled to handle the ball so far this season, and their opponents have taken advantage. Temple's opponents have scored 227 points off turnovers (an average of 20.6 per game) while the Owls have averaged just 11.9 ppg off opponent turnovers (131 total). After committing more than 20 turnovers just four times in all of the 2011-12 season, the Owls have now done so in six of 11 games to start the 2012-13 season.

YOUTH IN SPADES
Based on input from Division I women's basketball sports information directors, Temple has been determined to be the second-most inexperienced team in NCAA DI.

The information, collected by UIC's Mike Laninga, took the total number of years of experience on a team and divided it by the number of current players on the roster. Temple's players have an average of 0.727 years of experience to tie for second with SIU-Carbondale. San Jose State came in at number one with an average of 0.44 years per player. The Owls are not alone in the Atlantic 10, as Dayton and Rhode Island are among others tied for sixth on the list, and Butler is tied for 16th.

FIRST CAREER START FOR BROWN
Sophomore Rateska Brown, who has been a valuable “spark” off the bench for Temple, got her first career start at Michigan State on Dec. 29.

TWO-TIME BIG 5 PLAYER OF THE WEEK
The Philadelphia Big 5 honored Victoria Macaulay with the Big 5 Women's Basketball Player of the Week award on Dec. 17 and Dec. 31. Macaulay shot 8-of-11 from the floor en route to a game-high 18 points in a setback at Auburn on Dec. 16 to earn the first honor. She grabbed six rebounds, blocked three shots, and had three steals while playing all 40 minutes. At Michigan State on Dec. 29, Macaulay led Temple with her sixth double-double of the year, scoring 12 points and adding 10 rebounds.
