Game Notes vs. Kent State (PDF)

PHILADELPHIA - The first in a six-game road swing will take Temple women's basketball to Kent State for a 7:00 p.m. contest on Thursday, Dec. 6. The Owls (5-2) are coming off two big wins over Bowling Green and Syracuse, while the Golden Flashes are still looking for their first win of the season at 0-7. Live stats for Thursday's game are available HERE.

THE OPENING TIP
•The Owls are beginning a six-game road swing with this contest, and will not play again at home until January 7.
•Temple is coming off back-to-back impressive wins, over eight-time defending MAC champ Bowling Green (70-56), and previously undefeated Syracuse (74-67)...The Orange were receiving a number of votes in both national polls prior to the game.
•Fifth-year head coach Tonya Cardoza has a record of 98-40 and is just two wins away from reaching the 100-win milestone.
•The Owls scored a then-season high 70 points at Bowling Green and improved upon that with 74 points vs. Syracuse...The win over the Orange included a 49-point second half that helped the Owls erase a 14-point halftime deficit.
•Four players scored in double figures vs. Syracuse and two recorded double-doubles...Senior center Victoria Macaulay notched her fourth double-double of the season with 20 points and 11 rebounds to lead Temple.
•Sophomore Rateska Brown was named the Atlantic 10 co-Player of the Week after coming off the bench to record career highs against both Bowling Green and Syracuse...She scored 19 points vs. Syracuse and hit 4-of-8 from behind the arc.
•Freshman Sally Kabengano scored a career-high 17 points in leading Temple to the win at Bowling Green, while Brown came off the bench for a then-career high 15 points.
•Sophomore Tyonna Williams recorded her first career double-double with 14 points and 11 assists vs. Syracuse...She scored a game and career-high 15 points in Temple's loss to Rutgers on Nov. 21.
•Turnovers have proven costly for the Owls, who have committed over 20 of them in five of seven games...In the 2011-12 season, Temple committed more than 20 turnovers a total of just four times.
•Temple currently ranks third among all teams in the Atlantic 10 in field goal percentage defense at .337.
•Temple has six freshmen on a roster of 11, making the Owls the second-most inexperienced team in NCAA Division I women's basketball this season.
•Kent State is still seeking its first win after going 0-7 so far...Senior Diamon Beckford leads the Flashes with 8.9 ppg.

ORANGE SQUEEZED BY OWLS
After erasing a 14-point, 39-25 halftime deficit, the Owls handed Syracuse its first loss of the season on Dec. 2 in McGonigle Hall. Temple scored 49 points in the second half on 58 percent shooting, and led by as many as eight in the final minutes. Four players scored in double figures for the Owls, led by Victoria Macaulay with 20 points and 11 rebounds. Atlantic 10 co-Player of the Week Rateska Brown scored 19 points off the bench, and Tyonna Williams notched her first career double-double with 14 points to go with a career-high 11 assists. The fourth player to score in double figures was Natasha Thames with 10 points.

SCOUTING KENT STATE
The Golden Flashes are still looking for their first win of the season after starting 0-7 under first-year head coach Danielle O'Banion. Kent State lost three of those by 14 points, but has come no closer in any contest. Senior Diamon Beckford leads the team with 8.9 ppg, while Tamzin Barroilhet averages a team-best 6.0 rpg.

ALL-TIME SERIES VS. KENT STATE
This will mark the fourth meeting between Temple and Kent State, with the Owls having taken each of the previous three. The most recent meeting was exactly a year ago at Temple, with the Owls winning 68-33.

SECOND-HALF SURGE
In all seven of Temple's games so far this season, the Owls have scored more points in the second half than in the first. The Owls have 164 first-half points compared to 241 second-half points. They won the only game in which they were tied at halftime (vs. Montana). While a big second half was not enough to overcome deficits at Nebraska and against Rutgers, it was more than enough against Syracuse as the Owls out-scored the Orange 49-28 in the second half to erase a 14-point halftime deficit.

MACAULAY TAKING CHARGE
Along with leading the team in a number of categories on the stat sheet, senior center Victoria Macaulay ranks in the top five among all Atlantic 10 players in six areas. She is averaging 15.4 ppg (5th), 9.7 rpg (3rd), 51.9 percent from the field (4th), 1.9 blocks per game (5th), 7.6 defensive rpg (1st) and 34.9 minutes per game (5th).

YOUTH IN SPADES
Based on input from Division I women's basketball sports information directors around the country, Temple has been determined to be the second-most inexperienced team in NCAA DI.

The information, collected by UIC's Mike Laninga, took the total number of years of experience on a team and divided it by the number of current players on the roster. Temple's players have an average of 0.727 years of experience to tie for second with SIU-Carbondale. San Jose State came in at number one with an average of 0.44 years per player. The Owls are not alone in the Atlantic 10, as Dayton and Rhode Island are among others tied for sixth on the list, and Butler is tied for 16th.

MACAULAY DOUBLES UP FOUR TIMES
For the fourth time in the Owls' first seven games, senior center Victoria Macaulay notched a double-double in the Owls' win over Syracuse on Dec. 2. She scored a game-high 20 points to go with a game-high 11 rebounds. On Nov. 17 vs. Northwestern, Macaulay scored a career-high 27 points to go with 10 rebounds, while also blocking a career-high five shots and playing a career-high 40 minutes. Against Seton Hall on Nov. 14, she added 13 rebounds to 16 points, and in Temple's season-opening win vs. Montana, Macaulay pulled down a career-high 16 rebounds while scoring 21 points.

SPARK OFF THE BENCH
The Owls' second-leading scorer, sophomore Rateska Brown, has yet to start a single game in her career. She provides the always-valued “spark” off the bench for Temple, and has scored in double figures in four of seven games so far including the last three straight. Brown shined in a win at Bowling Green (Nov. 28), scoring a then career-high 15 points on 5-of-9 shooting overall and going 3-of-6 from behind the arc. She improved upon that performance by scoring a career-high 19 points vs. Syracuse and going 4-of-8 behind the arc, and was then named the A-10 co-Player of the Week.

KABENGANO PLAYING LIKE A VETERAN
It can be a daunting task to come in as a freshman and be a starter, but Sally Kabengano is playing like a veteran for the Owls. She ranks fourth on the team with 7.1 ppg and is third with 6.9 rpg. In Temple's recent win at Bowling Green, Kabengano scored a game and career-high 17 points, and in the Owls' loss to Rutgers she pulled down a game and career-high 10 rebounds.

SECOND CHANCES
Temple is averaging 7.9 more rebounds per game than its opponents, but is leading opponents on the offensive glass just 92-91 overall. However, it is the Owls taking the most advantage of those second chances. Temple has 74 second-chance points this season compared to 53 for its opponents. The difference was most notable in the Owls' win over Syracuse, as they recorded 22 second-chance points compared to 13 for the Orange.
