Jason Read to be Honored as Athlete of the Year
2.13.12 | Women's Rowing
PHILADELPHIA, Pa.- Temple University women's rowing head coach Jason Read will be one of three recipients to receive 'Athlete of the Year' at the Annual Schuylkill Navy's Awards Dinner, which will be held on February 25 at Lloyd Hall on Philadelphia's historic Boathouse Row. The dinner honoring Read will also recognize the Schuylkill Navy's Coach of the Year and Masters of the Year.
Along with Read, former Temple rower and current assistant coach Joe Spencer is also being recognized equally as Athlete of the Year. Both Read and Spencer continue to lead the Temple women's rowing team while training concurrently in preparation for the London Olympic trials, which are set to take place in June on Lake Mercer in Princeton Junction, N.J.
“This is an incredible honor to receive as the list of previous Schuylkill Navy Athletes of the Year is nothing short of a who's who in the sport of rowing,” said Read “That Temple has two honorees this year is a testament to the University's and Men's Coach Dr. Gavin White's continued production of rowers who train at the sport's very highest level well beyond their undergraduate years of competition.”
The Schuylkill Navy is one of the oldest amateur governing bodies in sports today. Currently it consists of 15 members and Associate Member Clubs all located along the prestigious Schuylkill River. This year's dinner is being hosted by Schuylkill Navy Commodore, John Hogan (SCAT '76).
“J.R. and Joe represent the best of both the Schuylkill Navy and Temple University. It is our privilege to recognize these young men at Lloyd Hall for their international success in 2011. We wish them the best as they continue to train on the Schuylkill River while chasing their Olympic dreams” said Hogan.
