PHILADELPHIA - On Thursday afternoon, the Temple men and women's track and field teams left campus to make their way to a familiar site up in Kingston, R.I. for this weekend's Atlantic 10 Championships being held Friday and Saturday.
Just two weeks ago, the Owls were on the campus of the University of Rhode Island when they competed in the Tribute to Charles Torpey Invitational, where closed out the regular season on a high note. Gabe Pickett and Lionel Wilson posted IC4A distances in their respective jump events, while seven members on the women's side notched career-bests.
Since the indoor half of the schedule began in December for both squads, it has been a season filled with much success all the way to the present, as individuals have consistenly left meets with new personal bests in their respective events.
Leading the charge on the men's side has been Josh McFrazier, who has time and time agian taken top spots in several events while also notching new personal bests. When the Owls take the track, McFrazier will be returning to Mackal Fieldhouse where he set the facility record with his first place finish time of 8.00 in the 60 meter hurdle.
For the women's side, freshman Jenna Dubrow has made a strong first impression in her rookie season in the Cherry and White. In her first collegiate meet, she broke Rebecca Mims' record time in the 3000 meter run before breaking her own record with her finish time of 10:07.42.
While Dubrow has been lightning on the track for the Owls, the same can be said for throwers Alanna Owens and Margo Britton, as the two have landed ECAC qualifying marks and personal records in nearly every one of their competitions this season.
Already this season, the Owls have been tested as they performed on a national stage when they went to Penn State in late January, where they went up against some high calibar squads from all across the nation.
On the opening night of the meet, both squads saw their distance medley relay participants take first place. The women's finish happened to be more noticeable, as they broke a 30-year old school record with a speed of 11:59.73. A day later, senior Travis Mahoney ran the one-mile run in 4:02.40, which was the nation's sixth-fastest time in the event this season. The success gathered against some of the nation's top running schools in the two-day competition, which should give the Owls confidence as they compete fot the league title this weekend.
