Breland wins at number six singles
SYRACUSE, N.Y. – The No. 73 Syracuse University women's tennis team (6-3) won its fourth consecutive match on Saturday afternoon, defeating Temple (1-4) with a 6-1 victory at Drumlins Tennis Club in Syracuse.
SU took the doubles point with victories on courts one and two. Yana Mavrina and Paola Calderon did earn an 8-2 win at third doubles over Alessondra Parra and Amanda Rodgers, but the damage was already done and the Orange had the 1-0 lead.
With the early advantage in hand, Syracuse singles 1-5 were all victorious to capture the 6-1 win. Rodgers was the first to finish as she won a straight set 7-5, 6-2 decision against Agnese Rozite on court five. Breanna Bachini followed that up with a 6-2, 6-4 triumph on court three, putting the host team ahead 3-0.
Jordan Batey didn't go down easily for the Owls at fourth singles, but Parra defeated her by a mark of 7-6(4), 7-5 to secure the win for Syracuse.
The final three singles bouts could have gone either way with each going three sets. Rebecca Breland earned Temple's only point with her 1-6, 6-2, 6-4 decision at number six over Jimenya Wu. Mavrina got the early advantage over No. 93 Emily Harman at No. 1, but eventually fell 3-6, 6-4, 6-1. Calderon was TU's final chance for another point, winning the first set of the second flight before falling 6-7(3), 6-1, 6-3 to Maddie Kobelt.
The Cherry and White are back in action tomorrow morning with a 9 a.m. match at Binghamton.
