Softball Picks Up 2-1 Win Over IPFW In First Game of 2012

Ali Robinson goes 2-for-3 in season opener
CONWAY, S.C. - Junior Ali Robinson went 2-for-3 in Temple softball's season opening 2-1 win over IPFW at the Chanticleer Challenge, hosted by Coastal Carolina on Friday, February 24. Robinson was a key part in both of TU's runs, scoring the first and batting the second in.
The centerfielder opened Temple's portion of the first inning with a double, moved to third on a sacrifice bunt by senior Samantha Schoell and eventually scored on a passed ball for the 1-0 lead.
The Owls increased it to a 2-0 advantage in the bottom of the fifth. With one out and runners on first and third, Robinson struck again, delivering a single to left field that plated pinch runner Daniele Raneri.
The Mastadons cut the lead in half in the top of the sixth when Stephanie Beuther homered to lead off the frame. Sophomore pitcher Brooklin White settled down after that, however, getting two strikeouts and a pop out to end the inning and the threat.
IPFW put two runners on via walks in the top of the seventh, and senior Capri Catalano was called into relief action with one out. The hurler induced a game-ending double play to pick up the save for the Cherry and White.
White (1-0) got the win with 6.1 innings of work, allowing five hits and striking out four. Megan Flenniken took the loss for IPFW, going 6.0 innings with four hits allowed and six K's.
Temple is 1-0 and will be back in action at 2:30 p.m. to face the host team.
