NEWPORT NEWS, Va. – Temple's Shey Peddy has been named the 2012 Atlantic 10 Conference Women's Basketball Player and Defensive Player of the Year, in voting conducted among the league's 14 head coaches. Peddy is the first student-athlete to garner dual honors since fellow Owl Candice Dupree received the same two awards in 2005 and 2006. Peddy, now a two-time A-10 First Team honoree, is joined on the list of all-conference honors by Kristen McCarthy who was named to the A-10 Second Team for a second year in a row.
The A-10 coaches also selected Dayton's Andrea Hoover as the Rookie of the Year, Charlotte's Epiphany Woodson as Sixth Player of the Year and Becca Wann of Richmond as the league's Most Improved Player. No. 19/22 St. Bonaventure's Jim Crowley was honored by his peers as Coach of the Year.
Peddy enters this week's Championship as the second-seeded Owls' leading scorer, averaging 17.0 points and 3.1 steals per game. The four-time A-10 Player of the Week, who was also named the United States Basketball Writers Association's (USBWA) National Player of the Week this season, helped pace Temple to its second place finish in the A-10 regular season race with a 13-1 league mark. She led the A-10 in scoring in conference games, averaging 18.6 points against league foes, while ranking second in steals per game.
The honors add to what is already an impressive list of accomplishments and awards for Peddy in her short, two-year career at Temple. The reigning Big 5 Player of the Year and an A-10 First Team and A-10 All-Defensive Team selection now as both a junior and senior, Peddy was recognized as one of the top players in Division I as she was named to the 2011-12 Naismith Trophy women's early-season watch list. Peddy scored her 1,000th career point in Dec., 2010, and has now scored 1,794 career points including 940 just at Temple.
Along with leading the team in scoring for the past two seasons, Peddy and has already cracked the top 10 in career steals. Her 192 steals rank 10th all-time with just 61 games played at Temple. On Feb. 19, Peddy tied a 27-year old record when she recorded 10 steals in the Owls' win at Rhode Island. Her 111 three-pointers at Temple rank eighth all-time, and her 60 treys so far this season rank third on the program's single-season record list.
McCarthy has now been honored by the conference in every year of her career as an Owl. She was an All-Rookie selection as a freshman, a First Team honoree as a sophomore and has been named to the Second Team now as a junior and senior. Just a few days ago, McCarthy became the fourth all-time leading scorer in program history, now with 1,577 points.
Helping lead the Owls to three NCAA Tournament berths already including two Second-Round appearances, McCarthy has played in 126 games for Temple. She was named the Big 5 Player of the Year in 2009-10 after leading the team with 14.8 points per game. That same season, she broke the program's 27-year old single-game scoring record when she put up 42 points in a win over Charlotte.
Among many other impressive accomplishments, McCarthy also ranks fifth all-time in field goals, sixth in three-pointers made, eighth in steals and ninth in rebounds. Earlier this year, McCarthy was one of 30 candidates selected for the Lowe's Senior Class Award which recognizes achievements in classroom, character, community and competition.
