PHILADELPHIA - The Temple men's basketball team looks to extend its season-high six-game win streak when it hosts George Washington Wednesday evening (6:00 p.m./The Comcast Network/1210 AM WPHT). Note the early start to the game that will also serve as Student-Athlete Recognition Night, a celebration of Owls' success in the classroom.
Temple, under the direction of head coach Fran Dunphy, sits atop the Atlantic 10 Conference standings with a 6-2 league mark (17-5 overall). The Owls boast the A10's top two scorers in senior Ramone Moore (18.0 ppg.) and junior Khalif Wyatt (16.4 ppg.). Senior Juan Fernandez (11.5 ppg.) also averages double-figures and gives Dunphy one of the top three-guard tandems in the nation. The trio has combined to make 126 of 313 three-pointers (.402) as well as dish 227 assists (10.4 apg.) on the season.
With the return of 6-11 graduate center Micheal Eric (7.2 ppg., 7.1 rpg., 2.0 bpg.), the Owls now have a strong inside presence. Redshirt freshman Anthony Lee (5.8 ppg., 6.5 rpg.), who asked Dunphy to return Eric to the starting lineup for the Rhode Island game Saturday, and junior forward Rahlir Hollis-Jefferson (8.9 ppg., 6.4 rpg., .600 FG%), give the Owls' a trio of interior players as well.
Besides Lee, sophomore guard Aaron Brown (7.8 ppg.), redshirt junior T.J. DiLeo (5.8 ppg.) and freshman guard Will Cummings (1.7 ppg.) round out Temple's nine-man rotation.
George Washington (8-15, 3-6 A10), under the direction of first-year coach Mike Lonergan, enters play Wednesday trying to snap a four-game losing skid. The Colonials are led by preseason first team all-conference selection Tony Taylor. The senior guard averages a team-best 14.1 points while ranking fifth in the A10 in assists (4.3 apg.). Junior guard Lasan Kromah (10.6 ppg.) also scores in double figures for GW.
The Owls lead the series, 50-16, and have won the last four meetings.
